Me dd4 and ds 10 m (in a pushchair ) was walking to school and I spotted a dog running about Barking while the owner was running after it trying to catch it the owner had to control over this dog. My ds stated to cry as he was hungry the dog very quickly came up to the pushchair and had his face right up to my ds.so I quickly got the dog with the collar and pulled him away I did try to give it back to owner but the dog was strong and pulled quite a bit and I let go and it ran. the owner then said I hate people who hurt dogs ! I mean ffs I didn't hurt it is toke control of a dog that could've Hurt my kids the owner had no control over it . Surely I did the right thing ?

You did. The owner was a useless twat

Wolfiefan · 02/12/2016 12:36

If all you did was use the collar to move it then you won't have hurt it. You were keeping your child safe. Owner is an idiot!

The correct response from the owner would have been

"I'm sorry, thank you for trying to catch my dog". UANBU

I got the collar gentle enough that the dog didn't yell out I was quick but definitely didn't hurt it at this point the owner was up the road so might of thought I hurt it !

report to dog warden. Even with vague details - they'll make a report and it might fit a bigger picture of a twat of an owner.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 02/12/2016 14:03

You did the right thing. If my dog was off lead on the street and I couldn't call her back (she wouldn't be, by the way, because I'm not an idiot) I'd hope someone would grab her collar too.

Totally inexcusable on the dog owner's part.

Wonderflonium · 02/12/2016 14:08

I hate owners who put their dogs at risk for being put to sleep because they don't train them properly, but your mileage may vary
(you did nothing wrong!)

BewtySkoolDropowt · 02/12/2016 14:13

'I hate dog leaves that don' t keep their dogs under control'

GeillisTheWitch · 02/12/2016 14:19

Dog owner was an idiot. Keep the damn thing under control or don't take it out in public.

StarryIllusion · 02/12/2016 14:30

If it was too hard it wouldn't have kept pulling or it would have yelped. You didn't do anything wrong imo just grabbed it and pulled it away. I've done that to my own dogs when they won't get out of something. He should have better control over it. Mine has occasionally decided he likes random kids and plonked his head in their laps but if he didn't respond to me, he would never have been out of reach and I would have checked him myself. You just don't let a dog get out of grabbing distance if they can't be trusted to respond to verbal instruction, it isn't rocket science. Some people are dicks.

Catsarefluffy · 02/12/2016 20:52

Thanks some people think I was wrong to even handle someone else's dog. I wonder if the owner even trains this dog as it was really out of control feel sorry for the dog tbh

jams professional dog persons hat on head

Nasty case of 'owner being a massive twat' here - perfectly reasonable thing to do, not your fault you couldn't hang on to hand dog back to owner.

What I will say however is that some dogs associate being grabbed by the collar with getting a bollocking and will react badly to it, so it is something I avoid doing to dogs I don't know (unless I am assessing their behaviour in rescue, as I was doing earlier today!).

But no, you were not unreasonable.

IKnowWhyACagedBirdSings · 02/12/2016 23:11

Been there.Told what do you think you are doing letting your child touch my dog. It's dangerous you know. Then bloody well keep it on a short leash. Don't go blaming the innocent kids your mutt chooses to approach
