To find the bin thief and steal it back.

My bin's been stolen. I only put it out at 5.30, I went out at 7 to do the weekly shop and buy a birthday present, when I got in an hour ago I noticed the bins on the street had been emptied but couldn't find mine, It's the only new variety on the street and has my house number in a lovely floral pattern, I've looked all long my street and the next one but still can't find it.

I've informed the council to check it hasn't been eaten by the bin lorry, it hasn't, they say it's £20 to replace it, even if it's been stolen, this seems ridiculous to me.

WIBU to wait until next bin day, have a good look around and find the bin thief and steal it back.

Or should I do as DH suggests and just order another one, it's not that we can't afford to pay the twenty quid but more the principal of having to pay to replace something that one of our neighbours has most likely hidden in their gaden.

I always bring my neighbours bin in with mine after they're emptied, sadly she doesn't return the favour. Sad

Could this thread BE any more British...! Xmas Grin

SquinkiesRule · 02/12/2016 11:30

Ohhh Bingate, I love a good bin thread.

hulkbuster · 02/12/2016 11:36

I had this once with the recycling boxes ours were painted with cartoon characters neighbour before we moved in liked to customise things Hmm---- they went missing after bin day and I spotted them down the road in a front garden so I flounced in and flounced out with MY boxes Grin

Katy07 · 02/12/2016 11:40

At my last house a neighbour nicked my nice new clean recycling box and left his broken grubby one out for me. And it had my house number on it. The next week I nicked it back (left him his crap one) and made sure I got out there first in future when they'd been emptied. I felt so much better afterwards :)

Ooh I love a bin thread.
My neighbour stole my bin once but managed to hide it.
I ordered another bin from the council, luckily it was free because they thought my bin had been eaten by the lorry.
So I labelled up the new bin with stickers etc and put it out 2 weeks later (fortnightly collections) to find that my old bin was parked outside my gate full of next doors rubbish. So there were then 2 bins with my house number on and the council will only empty one bin per household. I had to sit there and scrape the labels off the old bin with a knife. Unfortunately they stick really well and it took ages. I was so pissed off.

EverdeRose · 02/12/2016 13:43

Well I've had a good walk up the street and peered into the gardens I can't see it anywhere so I think whoever has it has hidden it well.
I've reported it as missing to 101 and told them about the mysterious bin seller as well so they'll look into that, quite gutted they didn't want my help for an undercover sting operation or anything remotely interesting.

DH has promised to scout the area again when he gets in too.

Please update after your dh operating.
I suspect 'I walked every street for miles' while he was secretly in the pub.

myoriginal3 · 02/12/2016 18:22

What the actual fuck did auto correct do.

EverdeRose · 02/12/2016 18:25

DH has returned, he took the dog who is very confused about all the extra walks he's had today.
DH (who thinks he's now Sherlock) hasn't found anything concrete although he does think that 3 doors away have taken it simply because 'he didn't look shocked enough when I told him about it' and there bin is apparently shit, compared to the Ferrari we owned.

I've made progress with the council though, after posting on Facebook about it on their page, basically I threatened to nick a bin myself or fly tip, even though I'd never do either, I received a call telling me that they'll send me a new one out to replace it as a gesture of goodwill. So as my own gesture of goodwill I'm planning on popping £20 in the charity box at the pub tonight.

I've not given up hope yet though ladies, I will hopefully gain the courage to jump the neighbours fence after a few G&Ts and may return with my rightful bin.

This happened to ours, so we rang the bin people and they said the trucks swallow bins all the time. Keep pushing for a new one for free, it's not your fault so you shouldn't have to pay.

destinywidow · 02/12/2016 18:26

Hang on, you have to pay for replacement bins??? Really??? Jeez, never knew that! Shock

EverdeRose · 02/12/2016 18:38

Spooky - the council have sworn that it wasn't eaten by the truck, I know in another case with this council they've admitted it, because even then they want payment because it's a charge for delivery, even though the bins can't be collected.

Destiny - theoretically the bins are free, it's a delivery charge that you have to pay, however you can't collect any of the bins so you just have to pay it.

Yeah and they're not cheap Destiny!

hanban89 · 02/12/2016 20:16

Bin thievery is right up there for me. I had to wait for 2 months for a new larger family bin as our waste now only gets collected every 3 weeks. Phoned the council every week and every week was told it would be delivered that week. So pleased when I finally got it as we had to like rubbish up the side of house for those 2 months. The week I got my new waste bin, it was recycle collection day, so out when my big blue bin and it disappeared! I couldn't believe it. Ours had a very obvious dent in the top so I marched up the road and looked into gardens, and found it in a neighbours garden along with his own! Cheeky git wanted two. I took it back and have written in sharpie all over it with my number!

harasas · 02/12/2016 20:21

This happened to me! Good news is it appeared next bin day, think the person who 'stole' it didn't want to return it before then as it would be obvious?! Anyway my council charges £50 for a replacement which I thought was rather pricey....
hope it comes back :-)

StarsandSparkles · 02/12/2016 20:25

I have bin problems of my own, one of my neighbours keeps putting my blue bin out every week even if there is only a couple of bits of cardboard in it. Its really starting to piss me off as i dont need to put it out every week yet whatever neighbour is doing this decides it has to go out Xmas Angry. Wibu to chain my gate shut every night? Xmas Grin

mineofuselessinformation · 02/12/2016 20:43

Wait til next bin day, then make sure you're there as they are emptied. If yours appears, take it back - and make sure you put your rubbish into the offending neighbour's garden.

WindInThePussyWillows · 02/12/2016 23:07

Those saying wait until the next bin day.. what is op to do with her waste in the meantime?!

dailymaillazyjournos · 02/12/2016 23:23

I luckily wasn't charged for a replacement when someone nicked mine a few years back. When the new one arrived I customised it radically all over with ridiculously bright painted pattens (even a bit on the wheels) and loads of my house number all over as well. I was worried I'd get a letter saying I'd defaced council property or something but I never have. And no-one has attempted to nick it again because a) they'd probably be too embarrassed to own something as nasty and b) because it would be incredibly hard and time consuming to cover up all the bespoke paintwork. Might be an idea for your replacement.

Badbadbunny · 06/12/2016 08:58

The bin wagon won't care if you've customised it and it won't be embarrassed if it eats it again. I've now seen it happen twice and the bin-men just carry on as if nothing has happened, leaving the occupant to argue the toss with the council about a replacement!

c3pu · 06/12/2016 10:13

My local authority will replace the bin for free (the first time around) IF you phone the rozzers and get a crime reference number for it.

After that, you gotta pay for it!
