Buying prescription items online

I was given a small sample size of doublebase gel by a friend who is a health professional to try (also they just had a load of free samples) because I have been complaining of extremely dry flakey skin that doesn't seem to respond to any other moisturiser that I have bought myself.

It's amazing and immediately made a difference to me and I would like to continue.

Now a google tells me it's prescription only but it does seem you can buy it from some pharmacy websites.

On one hand, this seems like a very silly time wasting trip to the GP to ask for it on prescription, in the current climate of stretched services, but on the other hand, it's on prescription only (for a reason I don't know about, it's non steroidal) so therefore people shouldn't be buying these things online themselves?

personally i wouldn't, they are probably ok but you never know, if you are exempt from charges them you should be able to get the script made up, even if you have to pay what's the problem. as least a gp can keep a check on it. failing that why not speak to pharmacist about this and save a gp appointment to boot ? there might be a reason it's prescribed, side effects etc or under laying health problems could be covered up.

Doublebase isn't prescription only! Where did you get that idea?

rollinghedgehog · 02/12/2016 10:49

To buy prescription only things you have to fill out an online form and it has to be approved so as long as you answer the same as you would if you were at the GP / give them all the relevant medical history it shouldn't make a difference.
The difference is you would pay for the item rather than a prescription charge - so it may be more or it may be less.
Not sure this is a prescription only cream though?

Doublebase is not prescription only. You can just go to your local pharmacy and buy some. It'll probably cost about £10 for 500ml.

just checked it out, you can buy it in boots among other places.

Just looked on the database and doublebase gel is a pharmacy only product so you can go into the pharmacy and buy it over the counter.

Ok thanks! It was confusing as lloyds pharmacy said prescription only!
