BBC 1 Report of Andrew Sachs Death

RIP Manuel! (Before i start this)

Right AIBU to think that Andrew Sachs memory should not include the continuous reminder of the Johnathan Ross/Russell Brand saga!

I feel like he did so much for comedy and was a fantastic actor. Why do they keep needing to bring it up? I have been watching since 6 this morning and every time they talk about his death, they also bring this up! Surely something that he was so deeply upset by doesn't need to be mentioned each and every time they talk about him!

I lister to the BBC as I find their TV news trite - yours is another example of why I am right to do this. Are they playing the clip of those two toerags actually doing the phone call?

RoseGoldHippie · 02/12/2016 08:22

Yes but they are talking over it. Bloody morons! I don't understand why this needs to be in his memoirs! Leave it to rest until they pass and we can remember what dick heads they both were at that time!

I stopped watching it for ages, think I might go back to that!

100% agree with you. That whole incident makes me so angry (not least in that Sachs was seen as the sole victim of it - not the woman who was also publicly humiliated, and who was really the target of their misogynistic 'banter') and I don't think dragging it all up is a) appropriate when he's just died and b) helpful at all, really.

ProfYaffle · 02/12/2016 08:26

I agree. Brief mention I could cope with but they seem to be putting it on a par with Fawlty Towers in his career Hmm I found the interview with his son really painful too.

voluptuagoodshag · 02/12/2016 08:27

They are plummeting in respect. I've complained twice to them in the past year for using headlines on their webpage that were more akin to gutter tabloid press. And they are so biased. There is a video of a recent interview with a journalist in Cuba about Castro's death. The anchorwoman in the studio was so obviously trying to present him in a negative way whereas the journalist in Cuba was batting everything back to her in a very eloquent and well put way - it was cringeworthy!

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 02/12/2016 08:28

I completely agree. It's not just on the BBC, it's in the papers too. I was cringing before I turned the page knowing it would be there, and sure enough, there it was, full size colour pic of the two of them. Snapped it shut immediately, such a shame, would have liked to read it but my irritation levels had been ramped up too far.

kali110 · 02/12/2016 08:28

Oh no Sad

RoseGoldHippie · 02/12/2016 08:34

ProfYaffle that is exactly it! It feels like they are putting it at the same level!

Just doesn't need to be dragged back up again!

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse oh god! I haven't seen the papers yet. It will probably be replayed over and over again for the next few weeks - that's me avoiding news over December !

I think if they did they would be heavily criticised for trying to 'cover it up '. They can't win either way.

But realistically he is well known because of that incident and I don't think his sad death would have been covered as much if it hadn't happened.

Sad but true.

Tanith · 02/12/2016 08:53

He did lots of voice-over and narration work as well. If you didn't know him as an actor, you'll almost certainly have heard his voice on some programme or other.

Agree about the phone-in debâcle. What idiots they were! They certainly don't deserve to be plastered all over his tributes.

Tanith · 02/12/2016 08:56

What a wonderful tribute from his wife, Melody!:

"She added: “Don’t feel sorry for me because I had the best life with him. I had the best husband and we really loved each other ... We were married for 57 years, we loved each other very deeply and it was a pleasure looking after him. I miss him terribly.”

RoseGoldHippie · 02/12/2016 09:02

Tanith that is lovely! Such a great statement and highlights how happy they made each other in life

In a slight defence of the BBC, I heard reports on radio (not TV) and thought "thank goodness they had the grace to not mention Ross/Brand". But they did rather reduce his career to only-Manuel and nothing else.

InsultingTheAlligator · 02/12/2016 09:05

That is a beautiful quote from his wife.

FlappysMammyAndPopeInExile · 02/12/2016 09:11

Thank you for the link Bourdic

That is the way to do it.

His wife sounds a lovely lady, too. It's very refreshing to find people in the public eye who don't seem to spend their time bed-hopping, but who just cherish the love that they have together.

He will be much missed - lovelyman.

Sixweekstowait · 02/12/2016 09:11

senua - yes that's what we were saying - that the BBC radio news was fine and that it was their TV coverage that was not

29redshoes · 02/12/2016 09:14

strawclutching I don't agree at all. I don't think anyone would have really cared if they'd only mentioned the Ross/Brand incident in passing, certainly not enough to accuse them of "covering it up".

Lovely quote from his wife.

TheWoodlander · 02/12/2016 09:18

Yanbu, I thought the same. I'd rather remember Andrew Sachs without being reminded of that debacle.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/12/2016 11:16

Totally agree- have just said the very same to dh. They should have reported his death and afforded him some dignity and simply reported about his life. The media creates and feeds this situation- they are so aghast at the actions of brand/Ross and yet continue to give them airtime for their behaviour. I imagine the majority of newspapers will give column inches to their behaviour too.

hackmum · 02/12/2016 11:47

A beautiful quote from Melody. There's something so touching about a couple who have been married 57 years and still feel that much love for each other.

I do agree with MargaretCavendish that the grand-daughter was the true victim of Brand and Ross's disgusting behaviour.
