School receptionist being a know it all?!

My daughter has had constipation for the last few weeks on and off and I saw the doc with her this morning who asked if she was eating much at school
She hasn't been and what she does it is mainly carbs, no sauces, very little meat and even custard is a no go so everything very plain
The only fruit she will have is bananas which they don't get everyday, only twice a week
She also doesn't run about much at playtime as she hates being outside in the cold so the doc said that wouldn't be helping so I've changed her to packed lunch as she will eat fruit in other forms etc
The receptionist replied " she has never heard in all her time there of a few days of carb type food causing constipation and she had a banana yesterday from another class as asked for one so I don't know how that can be the issue "
Found her very rude or Aibu??

It's none of her business really so I'd just ignore what she said. But I always thought that bananas weren't helpful if you have constipation.

RichardBucket · 01/12/2016 21:15

Rude, arrogant, unprofessional. YANBU.

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

MissDuke · 01/12/2016 21:21

I don't really think you need to discuss stuff like this with the receptionist to be honest. Is she getting any other form of exercise?

I once had the school receptionist (also first aider) diagnose my ds with a fungal infection despite me having already informed the school that he had eczema. She said she googled it and it definitely was fungal Hmm She insisted that I pick him up as apparently it was contagious.

PickAChew · 01/12/2016 21:23

Bloody rude of her.

If your DD has underlying gut issues at all - possible IBS or anything similar, it's very easy for a few days of less than optimal eating to put everything out of balance.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 01/12/2016 21:24

I agree, why did you go into detail with the school administrator and not just simply state DD would no longer require school Lunch as she will be having a packed one?!Confused

bumsexatthebingo · 01/12/2016 22:02

Isn't it generally on the job description that you have to be spectacularly rude to be a receptionist? I'm always pleasantly surprised when there's a nice one!
I would have just said something like 'oh really - I'll have to let the doctor know they've got that wrong then' but only in my head I'd just speak to class teacher in future.

DailyMailSucksAss · 01/12/2016 22:04

Weird. My GP told me to eat more carbs to relieve my constipation as it softens the stool by retaining water in it. Has def helped.

Wonderingwoe · 01/12/2016 22:09

Well she asked my reasons why that's why I explained
I had already told class teacher who said to let receptionist know to inform the caterers / funding side of things

Had a TA insist she was putting my DS in for an eye test referral via the school as his glasses hadn't changed in a while Angry. That was because his prescription hadn't changed,he had started looking after them and the style he had was his favourite. Apparently, that was all a lie and he just hadn't been to the optician for ages. I changed schools.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/12/2016 22:13

Well she's a school receptionist not a GP or paediatrician so that'll be why she won't have heard of it. Stupid woman.

You deserve a medal for not telling her to fuck off.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 01/12/2016 22:15

I don't understand why you'd discuss this with her or even why she'd ask.

Is she at a really loose end for work?? Confused

PandoraMole · 01/12/2016 23:32

Sounds like you'd be well qualified yourself bum Hmm

OP the receptionist sounds ill-qualified to comment but if you went into that level of detail with her she probably thought you were expecting a response and made a bad attempt at giving her opinion.

bumsexatthebingo · 01/12/2016 23:46

Yes because having an opinion on a forum is exactly the same as being unnecessarily snappy in real life. Both schools my kids have been to the receptionists have been arsey. Not just with me either - with everyone. Snide comments to parents about why they are 2 minutes late, refusing to let parents make an appointment with the head without them going into detail in front of a queue of people etc etc. The receptionists at the doctors are the same. Last time I was there one was loudly telling off an elderly patient for using the toilet as it wasn't a public toilet and was only for the use of patients when she had been sat in the waiting room for the previous half hour and clearly was a patient. As I said you get the occasional pleasant one which is always nice. I assume you're not one of them Pandora as I seem to have hit a nerve!

NiceFalafels · 01/12/2016 23:50

Receptionists are hit and miss. Ours makes constant mistakes.

PandoraMole · 02/12/2016 00:01

Well tbf it sounds like you've met some crackers bum and there are plenty of them about, but tarring all receptionists with the same brush is a bit unfair.

Some of us actually enjoy helping people and manage to be cheerful, friendly and discreet while we do it which can be quite challenging at times!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/12/2016 00:16

Have to say our current school one is amazingly lovely. The previous one was a real bitch.

We once had to bring in little juice cartons as a contribution to the school party. She berated me for not bringing sugar free squash "when they are running round like hooligans with a sugar rush we'll know who to blame Mrs Laugh".

How I kept the ODFOD in my head I will never know.

Tezza1 · 02/12/2016 00:25

It's a case of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

I remember the receptionist at an orthopaedic surgeon's office giving me advice that ran counter to what the surgeon had actually said. I remember thinking how irksome it must have been for the doctor to have spent 12 (or how ever many) years training, when she had picked it all in a couple of years of secretarial training.

Tezza1 · 02/12/2016 00:29

I think ripe bananas are okay, just not green ones.
