AIBU to refuse these pork chops? (really not life or death!)

Tesco delivery just arrived. The guy told me there were no substitutions and gave me the reciept. I noticed that 2 produceds had a shorter shelf life than they'd like. It listed the pork chops as being use by 3rd December (Saturday), and states that if I'm unhappy witha product please hand it back for a full refund.

I politely informed the delivery guy that I'd have to return the pork chops, he didn't say anything. When he passed me the bag with the pork chops in them, I handed them back saying something like "here they are, I'm sorry about these". I explained that otherwise we'd have too much meat to be eaten within a short period of time, and our freezer was too full for it.

He started arguing with me, saying that they were eat by the 3rd, so I had a few days. I explained again that it would mean me having to throw out some meat, because I wouldn't have time to use everything, and the reciept stated that I could have a fullrefund for shorter shelf life items.

In the end he took the pork chops.

Its not the end of the world, but I was a bit miffed by his attitude.

For any of you that haven't used tesco online, they give minimum expiry dates on products, so that youcan plan meals etc. If any products have a shorter date, then they are seperatley listed on the receipt and you have the option of returning them.

Its useful so that you don't end up with all of your meat having to be eaten within 2 days!

BTW, at the end he said his machine was broken, and he'd make a note of the return by hand. Maybe I'm being a bit suspicious here, but I wonder if I'll ever get that refund.

Use Ocado. They price match Tesco and the customer service is amazing. Even if you'd accepted the meat but noticed later the date was too short you're able to go online and request a refund.
I've had countless 'above and beyond' experiences of brilliant CS with Ocado including a £10 voucher and a full refund when I missed a delivery as I went into labour early. The voucher was sent with a message welcoming our new baby.

Ocado is so much better that Tesco. I wouldn't be happy with that service at all. Why offer the chance to refund if they get arsey about it?

Thanks. Maybe it is best if I switch. I decided to go to Tesco's to try and break our Waitrose habit, and get spending under control. I've got a 3 month 'delivery saver' deal where I get free delivery, and I've got that until Christmas, so I'll switch once its up.

They are normally very nice, I've never had trouble with them before, but their food isn't quite as nice (but is cheap!).

It seemed so trivial arguing over pork chops.

HOw much is delivery with Ocado?

Email Tesco grocery customer services. I did this when something similar happened with chicken which had a short shelf life that Wasnt pointed out to me. They were very helpful and refunded me immediately.

£11 a month if you buy a monthly 'smart pass' which means you can have as many deliveries you like for that fixed price. No restrictions on time of day/day of week.
I usually end up getting a couple of deliveries a week so works out just over £1 per delivery. Minimum spend is £40 per delivery.

Ocado price match but there aren't so many deals, so I do find it costs a bit more. The customer service is much better, though. It is rubbish that the driver argued with you, he should have just taken them back. It sounds like he didn't want to because his machine was broken so it was a hassle for him, but that's no excuse. You can hand back anything to the driver that you don't want, for whatever reason.

If I'm honest, my main reason for the delivery saver deal is having priority access to Christmas slots.

Last year we went to 3 different supermarkets, and ended up spending the best part of a day trying to sort out our Christmas food shopping. I've said NEVER AGAIN, so wanted to get a good slot booked in early. As it is, I booked about 15 hours after it opened, so the closest I could get was late night 22nd Dec, but its still better than nothing!
