To want all this from a campsite family holiday in France

I have been looking into holidays online and I keep getting put off by bad Trip Advisor reviews, so I thought I'd seek some advice here! I'm also starting to think my expectations may be too high...
We have two children age 8 and 5. We want a campsite that is....not massive but not tiny, good pool facilities, restaurant on site, near a town where we can go for a few drinks/meal in the evening, pretty/interesting area, near the sea (not essential), large pitches with nice mobile homes, onsite shop, great weather?
Please help, I would love to hear your suggestions. Also, am I asking too much?!

Royal Pavilion in Bidart, just south of Biarritz. Direct access to beautiful beach with sunsets, beach fires, champagne from the campsite shop and moonlight swimming. Surfing, amazing beach cafe food and glitz of Biarritz. No idea about mobile homes as we camped. Great weather. Day trip to Bilbao and the Guiggemheim or just drive to Spain because you can. Loads of beaches within easy access for a change of scene. Lovely organic supermarket less than 1k away and shop and restaurant on site which was OK but not a patch on the beach restaurants.

If you go to the Vendee, as firawlwa suggests, take a trip to Puy De fou. Brilliant place

Camping de la Plage, La Trinite sur Mer. Only criterion you might struggle with is pitch size but it has everything else, a clientele who return year on year for decades and a perfect beach.

Camping de la Baie (mentioned up thread) is owned by the same people and equally lovely.

If you're willing to drive to the SW, this place is lovely. www.paillotte.com

For camping in France we always choose a Castels site as they have great facilities and are really well maintained. It's always better to book directly with the site as well (saying this as someone who worked for eurocamp/keycamp etc) as they keep the best pitches for their own sales and run their own free animations programme for the children (often joining up with the kids clubs from eurocamp etc anyway). Their staff are also much more likely to be conscientious, knowledgable of the local area and have a higher standard of cleaning as on larger sites the courier teams are usually 18 year olds who are there for a summer away (again I have been one and did work hard and know that there a lot of good couriers so am not knocking them but have also seen the other side too). As for location the Loire Valley is fabulous with great weather (very hot) and lots of history and culture. We stayed on Domaine de la Breche this year in Saumur and had an amazing holiday.

We stayed at Domaine de la breche too! Lovely site, but def a drive to town and no sea - but "beach" on lake beside Loire. Pool fab, and weather was amazing.

Carnac, camping les Druides is smaller, no shop (but daily bread delivery), basic pool. Close to town, nice beaches.

Camping longchamps in St lunaire, Brittany is nice - pool with slides, walk to beach and town but Brittany weather a gamble.

If weather is key, head as far south as you can be bothered to drive.

Ty Nadan .....Brittany
Book direct with campsite as they have all the biggest pitches
Superb for kids of that sort of age

cuckooplusone · 01/12/2016 19:44

I agree with camping de la baie in La Trinite sur mer in Brittany, one of my favourite places. Have a look at San Sebastien in Spain as well - amazing food in the old town

We've stayed at le Clarys plage in the vendee twice now. Nice site, but can be a bit noisy in high season, nice pool with slides and splash area. 5 minute walk to lovely sandy beach. When we booked through eurocamp we got a bigger pitch better located than previously with Thomson. It's a smallish town with a few restaurants and a super-u all within walking distance, but there are some lovely towns, Beaches and forest walking nearby.

Don't know about the campsite, but Sarlat is stunning and there are so many beautiful towns round there.
