To wonder why people still break into cars?

What do they expect to find! Someone got into my car last night -not really broke in as I forgot to lock it - obviously had a good look through but I keep nothing in there so nothing missing and lesson learned.

Are there valuable things in cars anymore?

why do you mock them? they're right? there's a whole niche in vintage car accessories like tape decks and they're often stolen to order

You're considering a posh car, and smart radio system. I doubt anyone would have broken in to it when it was brand new. Radio was bottom of the range when new, and shows its age now. It certainly isn't something vintage thieves would look for. Car's been written off at least once for a minor dent and is only worth something with 4 new tyres and a full tank of petrol. I've seen cars at the scrap heap looking better. but it's as good as it ever was
But if they did try and steal it then probably having to bump start it would be more off putting than the crook lock.

But if you'll give me £50 for the radio because you collect vintage radios I'll steal it myself. Grin

Someone* has been breaking into cars parked outside our local nursery, even just to steal a couple of coins.

*Actually, everyone knows who it is because the same person always asks for a few coins to buy a drink, at 8am.

Thieves are none too bright.

That's it.

Duckyneedsaclean · 30/11/2016 17:12

Someone broke into my car 7 years ago & stole the radio. Left a pooey flannel on the seat too.

Middle of the afternoon in a busy supermarket carpark. Bizarre.

Duckyneedsaclean · 30/11/2016 17:13

Ooo another time they stole a wheel, and left it propped up on another wheel. That was weirder. Just put that wheel on, it was fine.

PersianCatLady · 30/11/2016 17:34

Thieves are none too bright
If they need drugs and they only need £10 to ease their immediate need they will do anything including breaking into 10 cars for parking change.

BusterGonad · 30/11/2016 18:23

Ducky a pooey flannel??? They must've been caught short!

dingdongdigeridoo · 30/11/2016 19:14

Some people are careless. I went to the cinema the other day and the car next to me had a handbag and packet of cigarettes on display on the passenger seat. I wondered whether it was a police sting.

wasonthelist · 30/11/2016 19:52

Is it careless though? Shouldn't we be able to leave stuff about without it automatically being stolen?

QuimReaper · 30/11/2016 19:57

Duck the thief left a pooey flannel?! Shock

no, I'm actually not.

When I was involved in that world with an ex, it was the scruffier parts that were most desirable, the ones that looked good to me had been customised and adjusted, the scruffy neglected items and accessories were more saught after because they'ld been left as they were when first bought..

TinselTwins · 30/11/2016 20:07

having been written off isn't a problem either for vintage car part organised theifs, because even if a vintage car is in perfect nick its usually worth more to them in parts (and easier to shift if stolen, usually sold abroad)

They're looking for different things than you'ld think, the well restored cars were usually less desirable to them.

WhatHaveIFound · 30/11/2016 20:12

The last car i had broken into was 4 years ago and the policeman told me i'd probably been followed home as the thief would have seen the expensive stereo/satnav unit. They stole that but didn't get the removable front or remote control that i'd taken in the house (so not really worth anything to them).

There's posters on my local FB board every day complaining about stuff getting stolen from cars or them being stolen. I never leave anything in mine overnight apart from the emergency chocolate!

I always kept my work laptop in there along with my work phone. I also used to leave my branch keys in my car and had anyone realised where I worked they would have had access to roughly 50k - 200k worth of brand new cars depending on stock. More often than not I had brand new 60k cars parked there as my branch was the most secure in the area, stuff like range rovers, Mercedes Benz, BMW etc. ""Thankfully the scaly wags in my area didn't cotton onto this and my car was never broken into. I no longer work for that company.
I usually forget to bring my bag out the car, so normally my purse is in there. To be fair I normally forget to lock my car. I'm just forgetful :(
