In feeling guilty.

This morning I reported a sub contractor for saying " Fuck off back to Africa and die Nigger" about one of my colleagues

His boss has since replied to say that although the person said it was a joke he has been dismissed.

As it is just coming up to Christmas I feel really guilty. AIBU to feel like this.

Whether your colleague heard it or not, there is never ever a reason to use that word or to spew racist bile. If more people did what you did, like a PP says, the world would be a better place.

What a twat! Boss doesn't sound much better if he thinks it's a joke. You did the right thing OP he has no one to blame but himself.

Mynestisfullofempty · 30/11/2016 12:44

If the boss thinks it was a joke I'd doubt that he really did sack the racist. He may have just told you that.

Henrysmycat · 30/11/2016 13:04

What if the other guy was your child or grandchild or your partner or someone you love? What would you feel? Enraged and would have reported the racist straight away, (if you didn't punch him first).
The racist should count his lucky stars he only got dismissed. He would have his head cut off if he did in another environment.
I've seen racial abuse and lived through it in the US, because I look Mexican therefore I am not allowed expensive cars or fancy bags. Let me tell you, there is nothing nice or even tolerable about racism.
Thank you for doing the right thing.

Because that is an acceptable term of phrase to go about using!

I'm glad you reported him, maybe he'll think twice in future about opening his mouth and letting such trash fall out of it!

FatOldBag · 30/11/2016 13:08

Fucking hell! You feel guilty because you're a lovely person who thinks about consequences for other people, even if those people aren't very nice. But you did the right thing because the consequences (to individuals and to wider society) of allowing this behaviour to go unchallenged and unpunished are much worse.

Topseyt · 30/11/2016 13:13

No need to feel guilty at all. You did the right thing.

You reported him for spewing forth his offensive, racist bile and he has paid the justifiable consequences.

It wasn't a joke. He just said that to his boss to minimise what he did when he realised what was about to happen but I would be willing to bet that at the time he meant every word. It wasn't funny.

Ohbehave1 · 30/11/2016 13:31

His boss didn't think it was a joke. He just said that the guy had said he meant it as a joke. He did admit to saying it which surprised me.

Thanks for all the support. I still feel a touch guilty. It's not his families fault he has lost his job and they are no doubt going to be the ones to suffer.

Feel proud for challenging racism.
