AIBU to be horrified by the Stolen Children of England

I just watched a French documentary called "England's stolen children" and can't believe this is happening in England. Horrifying, scary, unbelievable, it is like a horror movie...

Basically, social services are taking babies from their parents based on suspicion that abuse might happen in the future, except that the decision is made based on ridiculous things.
A lady had her three children taken from her, including a breastfed baby because she went to the ER for a child's broken ankle and they judged that he must have been beaten by his parents (only based on the ankle). X years later the parents manage to prove the fracture was due to scorbut. And they found out the initial report from the ER says "no sign of fracture".
The judge admitted they shouldn't have taken the children and the parents were innocents. But the children were given to adoption so the parents will never see them again.
That is just one of the stories.
Some women are told while pregnant that their newborn will be taken as soon as he arrives (and thzney do it).
The documentary says it is due to the facts that counties have to reach a number of children given to adoption so they target poor/uneducated parents and find any reason to take their children.
And as fostering costs money to the state they prefer adoption.

AIBU to ask if you heard about it here in the UK? And if yes, what do you think? Could it be true or are they exagerating?

I am really shaken.

If we say 'Hemming' three times on this thread he doesn't turn up does he?! I rather thought he had form for that.

Or is he a PBP?

tldr · 01/12/2016 14:41

He's banned! If he showed up we could get him banned (again) under the pbp rule.

Letdownbackthen · 01/12/2016 14:57

Sorry I can't bring myself to RTFT I'm so late to the game but I know it's really bloody hard to adopt children, there just aren't that many kids going up for adoption as in previous years. I think SGO's might play a part in that.

I was in care for part of my life and let down (I feel) by social services however I don't see this baby snatching being true

conserveisposhforjam · 01/12/2016 14:59

It's not very seemly is it for a (former) MP - being banned from mumsnet? How did he EVER get elected?

tldr · 01/12/2016 15:09

He was an actual MP at the time. An Actual MP. It made headlines. (Well. Small headlines.Grin)

TheHouseOfIllRepute · 01/12/2016 15:14

For those who believe the targets which were actually set for children already in care
Where do you think the cash comes from? It costs a fortune to take adopters through the process, many drop out or do not end up adopting,
No money is handed over. How do SW get the cash. The decision is made by a judge anyway and mistakes are often made by a medical person
Re JH and IJ I don't believe they care if a child is being abused. I think they come from the man is king of his family approach. It is therefore his right to do what he wishes with his wife/children
Or they have even worse thoughts

TheHouseOfIllRepute · 01/12/2016 15:15

I don't mean mistakes are often made just that when they are it seems to be the diagnosis which is faulty

Spero · 01/12/2016 18:00

oi! it was the front page of the Birmingham post I will have you know!

It's framed on my office wall.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/12/2016 18:03

Oh yes, I remember all that.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 01/12/2016 18:42

spero
Then we are office twins Grin I'm awaiting further headlines regarding a member of his fan club and in anticipation have matching frames.

To be perfectly honest even though lots of people go ohhhhh God not another thread on this topic it's always a worthy subject (IMO) because many people are terrified of Childrens services (to the point that in real life I rarely tell people I used to work for them) honest but robust debunking helps remove a barrier to people obtaining support that they need.

quaidorsay · 01/12/2016 21:16

I am confused - I just googled john hemming birmingham post and just got lots of entries about the fact that he has been selected to stand again if an election goes ahead for mid '17, and a reference to his campaigning about making the family courts more open and ending the super gagging re statistics by the family courts (or something).

Nothing about being a banned poster? Have I missed the point?!

Natsku · 01/12/2016 21:24

Sad that some people believe this. Social workers have a very difficult job, and they don't get more money from removing children, plus leaving from stress is very common. I live abroad but DD has had two social workers leave already, one after a long period of sick leave (the other for unknown reasons).

My parents adopted a sibling group in the early 90s. It took then 7-8 years of fostering before they could adopt. During that time my brothers were terrified of being sent back to the children's home.

Spero · 02/12/2016 00:24

Enjoy.

I love that you've done that. Is it behind glass? So you could use felt tips to draw funny glasses/moustaches/lipstick on him then wipe it off?

Spero · 02/12/2016 00:27

Just read that telegraph link and I am bloody annoyed now.

It wasn't 'inadvertent'. He tried to out at least three users. He then gave the Daily Mail my real name AND my user name and they printed them side by side. Clear attempt to intimidate. Unluckily for him I don't care who knows who I am as I don't put anything on the Internet of which I am ashamed of or embarrassed by. But for many people, that would have been devastating - and that is what he hoped to do.

Spero · 02/12/2016 00:28

I light a reverent candle underneath it every night. It still cheers me up, even 2 years later.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 02/12/2016 00:30

The man and his merry band of cheerleaders are wank stains on humanity

WouldHave · 02/12/2016 14:08

Slightly off the point, but how can he stand for election in mid 2017? We're not due another one till 2020, unless there's some massive crisis around Brexit.

OlennasWimple · 02/12/2016 14:54

Maybe he means start the selection process to become the candidate for 2020?

quaidorsay · 02/12/2016 16:40

Yup, trying to "out" someone on here is pretty despicable. I can't believe the daily mail printed a username and real name side by side.

Re the election, I think it is if May calls one.

UnbornMortificado · 02/12/2016 16:55

My ex-p will tell anyone who will listen that SS have unfairly stopped his contact with DD.

It's complete bollocks police raided his house and found drugs and paraphernalia. He doesn't tell people that part.

I have severe mental health issues (although I've been stable for a year) apart from the above ex-p putting malicious reports in about my husband I haven't had SS involvement.

I acknowledge I have a lot of family support and I'm classed as self aware. Meaning if I'm having a breakdown I'm aware of it and DC's go to family whilst I'm hospitalised or my meds changed.

WouldHave · 02/12/2016 18:07

Re the election, I think it is if May calls one.

But she can't under the fixed term parliament legislation.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 02/12/2016 18:17

But she can't under the fixed term parliament legislation.

It can be done. It isn't easy though.
