AIBU to think there HAS to be anxiety pills that can help me?

I have terrible anxiety, and am currently trying out Dosulepin medication (tricyclic AD) without much luck to be fair.

I have tried SSRIs, 5-6 different ones, and they all cause me a side effect that is a sensation of electric shock in my brain. It's rare but not unheard of.

I then tried Mitrazapine which did wonders on depression, but did not touch anxiety. And it made me gain 50% of my body weight on top of my normal weight, making me obese :(

I have a meeting with a psychiatrist soon, but thought I would ask the wisdom of Mumsnet first. What can help for anxiety? If you have any medication for it, what is it?

I'm not coping at all, sorry for posting this in AIBU, I just figured here has to be someone with advice.

Meant to add, it took a decade of SSRI's to eventually be prescribed the clomipramine, and i had a decent effect from it at just 80mg, when the max daily dose is 250mg.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy worked wonders for my anxiety, however this was also in conjunction with medication (initially). I would highly recommend talk therapy alongside any medication for mental ill health.

After years on carbamazapine for BPD and anxiety, they became less efficient and coming off then is giving me the electric shocks in my brain - it's awful. I've been put on quetipine. Only been on it a few weeks but it certainly helps me sleep ! Not sure about how effective it is but it's meant to be pretty good.

I take dosulepin, it works brilliantly for me. It took a while before it really started to work.

First line advice for anxiety starts with regular daily exercise, really good diet, with no caffeine, plenty of protein, maybe add a multivitamin, does yoga work for you ?
Meditation is helpful but not recommended if you have any trauma.....

Medication then builds on top of this and other people have that all covered

Wow, thanks for all the replies!

I am on a list waiting for some therapy, so hopefully it will help. I have tried CBT in the past, and it didn't really make a difference to me, but have had other types of therapy that has helped a lot!

My most recent pills, Dosulepin, was given alongside Buspirone. Propanolol I was given whilst on Mirtazapine instead. I think I won't take it until I have clarified with my psychiatrist that it is ok to take both. Won't take St John's Worth, as I'm not sure if it would be a good mix!

WLF46 Issue is that bipolar is a disorder caused by chemicals in your brain, it doesn't go away. Same with Tourettes, it's a "signal" issue in the brain, and will never go away. I have accepted the fact I will be on medications for life, because my illnesses are for life. But this anxiety is new, and I hope I can get rid of it, because I am not coping whatsoever how it is now! I did take propanolol before and it had no effect on me, so at least better than having an adverse reaction!

Quietiapin (sp) I have tried before, and had a bad reaction to them, I'd struggle to breathe and eventually pass out. Yet I kept taking them for several months because I thought maybe when I got used to it, it would get better Hmm. I was 19 and somewhat clueless.

Thank you, reassuring to hear it can work, but might take a while. It's been about 2,5 weeks now, so I'm still hopeful!

User...115 I am trying to sort out my diet for the better, and I go for lots of walks with my boy in his pushchair. I can't do yoga due to a knee injury last summer, and meditation sends me into hysteric crying an hour afterwards... I have absolutely no idea why, but it has a really bad effect on me. I have tried several times, every time I have a breakdown! Confused
