Watching movies at nursery??

Picked DD up today and she was watching The Grinch at Nursery. About to think they should be doing something with the children rather than sitting them in front of a TV?

YANBU.

I think that is crap.

MommaGee · 29/11/2016 12:57

How many hours is she in? If all day, yabu. They're surely allowed down tine and it's a cook Christmas movie. If half day and they've basically walked in, put telly on, turned it off and sent them home then I'd be less happy. Is it a one off or regular?

emmanuelcant · 29/11/2016 12:57

at handover time? Not an issue if it's for a short period of time.

Sirzy · 29/11/2016 12:59

Depends. If it's all day then I wouldn't be happy.

Odd hour especially at pick up time wouldn't bother me

ButterflyOfFreedom · 29/11/2016 13:06

YANBU

One of the criteria for when we were looking for a suitable nursery was that it did not have a TV.

LagunaBubbles · 29/11/2016 13:07

You will get lots of YANBU. But personally I dont see the issue with this.

Buglife · 29/11/2016 13:11

If it's in between dinner ending and pick up time (5-6) I don't care what they do, the kids have been there all day and done so much by then, and judging by how they are all clattering around when I go to get DS it would be hard to coral them into any group activities. They don't do it at his (it's more of a toy free for all at that point) but it might be a good chill out time for them during the madness of pick up.

Mummamayhem · 29/11/2016 13:12

I'm OK with films/tv every so often.for my son in particular who has dropped his nap, his nursery days are 9am-3pm ..he gets tired and grumpy and a chill out plonked in front of TV relaxes him and means he can then concentrate better on the next task/game. I'd rather he was happier than over entertained and exhausted.

crazywriter · 29/11/2016 13:19

My DD nursery did this at the end of the day, usually a Friday night. It was handover time and usually just 3 kids left and one staff member who also had to tidy up. It didn't bother me. My DD would always tell me about the things she learned and games she played so I knew it wasn't all the time. YANBU if it's all day but YABU if it's at the end of the day for the last 20 minutes or so. It really depends on how long your child is in.

Trifleorbust · 29/11/2016 13:20

One off or regular thing? I don't see the harm as a treat.

TheWrathFromHighAtopTheThing · 29/11/2016 13:22

Oh for goodness sake, kids don't need to be stimulated every minute of every day. They've probably been running around for hours on end, now they're relaxing a wee bit.

No harm at all.

LagunaBubbles · 29/11/2016 13:23

Oh for goodness sake, kids don't need to be stimulated every minute of every day

Totally agree with this.

ChasedByBees · 29/11/2016 13:23

I wouldn't like this at all. How old is your DD?

Yanbu
But the TV is probably cheaper than a proper member of staff

LagunaBubbles · 29/11/2016 13:27

But the TV is probably cheaper than a proper member of staff

Nurseries still have to have the correct amount of staff based on the amount of children they have on each shift, the TV doesnt substitute for one.

RedHelenB · 29/11/2016 13:28

YABU - a bit of television wont hurt!

FlossieFrog · 29/11/2016 13:30

YANBU

A small amount of age appropriate TV is ok (in my opinion) for little kids, but the Grinch isn't age appropriate for nursery age kids.

tooneedyme · 29/11/2016 13:31

He's in half says and it was on when I collected him near lunchtime but they had been watching for some time. It's never happened before.

OP posts:
crazywriter · 29/11/2016 13:36

Then YABU OP. It's not usual and at lunchtime, which can be a difficult time for nursery staff with handovers and dealing with some kids getting lunch and others not (not all got lunch at my DD nursery for various reasons).

insancerre · 29/11/2016 13:36

Thanks Laguna
I'm a nursery manager
I'm well aware of what hapens in nurseries

BenefitsQuestions · 29/11/2016 13:38

Was it this film? It's a PG!! Definitely
Not suitable for nursery

brasty · 29/11/2016 13:38

I would prefer they read to them as part of a chill out time. As a one off, I wouldn't care.

TheWrathFromHighAtopTheThing · 29/11/2016 13:39

Kids tend to get pretty wired and knackered at this time of year. If it's never happened before I'd say that's part of it. That, and - it's a Christmas movie.

I'm baffled by the things people worry about!

LagunaBubbles · 29/11/2016 13:40

Well if you are "well aware" insancerre you should have known that a TV is not used as a substitute for a proper member of staff then eh, which wasnt clear from your post - my apologies - which seemed to indicate you thought a TV was being used instead of employing the correct amount of staff.
