To tell you that it's "rein" not "reign".

Because it is and it's doing my tits in!!

Rein. Rein. Rein. Rein. Rein.

Free rein. It's an equestrian term meaning to give the horse freedom of movement.

It is NOT reign. That's what the Queen does.

It's right up there with "intensive purposes" and "doggy dog world"!! ShockWink

reign in your attitude OP!

AddictedtoLove · 29/11/2016 08:36

It's right up there with "intensive purposes" and "doggy dog world"!!

Or "draws" - as in "chester draws."

Pigeonpair1 · 29/11/2016 08:37

Also remember a big debate with my mum over whether it was "tenterhooks" or tenderhooks" (she was adamant it was the latter).

StrangeLookingParasite · 29/11/2016 08:37

And it's not a chester draws

Nor does anyone have a set of bowels in their kitchen cupboard.

Ew.

SestraClone · 29/11/2016 08:38

My current fave is "bone apple tea" Grin

Liiinoo · 29/11/2016 08:42

And discrete/discreet. They sound the same but have very discrete meanings.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/11/2016 08:42

"bone apple tea" Grin

My bugbear is advise used as a noun.

'I want to advise you to be careful...'
'I'd like to give you a piece of advice...'

What puzzles me about that one is that those two words sound different, so why use the same spelling for both? (Obviously the answer is that looking for logic in English spelling is a waste of time, but still.)

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 29/11/2016 08:43

I hate "role on Friday" etc

But on a serious note, what I really hate is when OPs obviously struggle with punctuation or grammar, and the first 5 posters make a big point about how hard it is to read.
Ffs if you can't get the gist of what someone is saying from a long paragraph then maybe you need help, not them.
It's so demeaning.

diamondofdoom · 29/11/2016 08:43

My 23 year old sister thought it was called a 'piggy mix' instead of pick 'n' mix until a few months ago.

I always thought it was 'parce the parcel' instead of 'pass the parcel' - although that may be because I'm Scottish and my mum's English & it sounds like parce when she says pass haha.

Never knew about rein and reign but luckily I never seem to need to use these words.

thetemptationofchocolate · 29/11/2016 08:45

Toe the line is quite an interesting phrase. Here's an article on the origins of the phrase, and having read this it seems obvious that it's toe not tow.

There isn't one that pacifically annoys me.

billyzanescal · 29/11/2016 08:49

I know the hotdogs go on.

OverTheGardenGate · 29/11/2016 08:50

Apologies. Somebody has defiantly already said that.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/11/2016 08:50

It doesn't phase me

Instead of It doesn't faze me.

I don't really mind the others - it's just this one that irritates.

5to2 · 29/11/2016 08:52

I use en route but "on route" doesn't seem too bad. Maybe a bit of a franglais but I think it can be forgiven, thinking about how the French bastardise English. "Le smoking" etc.

ravenmum · 29/11/2016 08:53

Don't loose your temper over it ...

hackmum · 29/11/2016 08:53

Let's not forget damp squid, which always cracks me up.

I like 'doggy dog world'. It sounds nicer than dog eat dog.

Life's too short to get the rage over every little thing.

Hullygully · 29/11/2016 08:54

I don't know why it's considered bad form to politely correct errors. I agree jeering is unnecessary, but in other areas of life it is perfectly acceptable to correct errors so why not in language?

If you want people to focus on content, don't distract them with (bad) form.

Polska03 · 29/11/2016 08:55

Another vote for 'draw' instead of 'drawer' it gives me the rage!!

CoraPirbright · 29/11/2016 08:56

People pronouncing mischievous as "mis-chee-vee-yus". Look at the final syllable - there is no 'i' OR' ee' in it. STOP PUTTING ONE IN!! I don't usually even think about pronunciations as so much is down to dialect etc but this one is PLAIN WRONG. Gah!

Never put your disabled child or elderly parent in for 'rest bite' - They will come home with a hunk missing from their backside
