Out of date food Tesco!

lostgirl77 · 28/11/2016 23:38

I nipped to Tesco on the way to my night shift, bought a chicken Caesar salad, just sat down to eat it and noticed it went out of date yesterday! Angry

Aibu to think this is really bad! Its not even just a day out of date, in half an hour it will be 2 days out of date!

Isn't it like a deadly sin for shops to have out of date food still on shelves? It's not even a best before it's a proper used by!

I have the receipt, what's the best way to complain?

It's only fair that I get at least the cost of a pizza rthat I'm going to have to buy now reimbursed! Grin

Yes, lostgirl, that IS indeed devastating.

You need to put 'mental anguish' in to your email - at least as bad as your rumbling tummy

Benedikte2 · 29/11/2016 00:34

Off the point but re dates. We get our groceries delivered by Sainsburys and it's not unusual to get something dated use by the following day. Drivers are supposed to tell you if something is "short dated" but apparently, something that has to be consumed the following day does not fall into that category. I think that's totally unreasonable because that's not always possible and when you are purchasing a weeks groceries you expect the food to last at least a few days. By their reckoning you could find you needed to consume all the perishables within a few days. Sainsburys did refund ( it was pate so not safe to consume after use by date) but that's not the point.

Uterus that reminds me of this gem I saw a few years back...

OP can you get food delivered to your office?
I cold last that long without something. Or has a colleague food they can share?

lostgirl77 · 29/11/2016 00:38

There's nowhere open for delivery now, I have managed to scrounge a pasty from someone so it's not as dire as it first seemed! I don't know how I'm going to feel in about 1 hour though when I'm hungry again!! Confused

Add this at the end of the email..

I'm so huuungrrry....

And definitely include the daily fail sad face, it should include a hand to the head like your about to faint. similar to the one the woman pulled who lost the vibrator

PenguinsandPebbles · 29/11/2016 00:40

pacific I really hope you don't :)

melj1213 · 29/11/2016 00:46

I'll email them tomorrow as I'm too much of a wuss to see an actual person, I'll probably end up apologising to them!

OP I used to work in customer services at Asda, if Tesco's policies are anything like ours were, all you need to do is take the packaging (for the barcode & date stamp) and the reciept to the customer service desk in store and they'll refund you and, if they're any good, will offer at least a replacement or a giftcard by way of goodwill.

Also, on a practical level, you bringing it in will mean that the customer service rep can then pass on the information to the department manager so they can check which shop floor colleague isn't doing their job properly and check whatever they have been working on to make sure that there are no other out of date products in their section.

Graphista · 29/11/2016 00:46

It's an offence but you might be reassured to know its unlikely to be unsafe to eat. Although the foot well storage might be a factor.

But yea complain with as much evidence as possible.

Friend of mine is ahem not a great cook had a half raw chicken the other day (she'd forgotten to turn the oven on then turned it on but served herself the chicken at the time it would have been ready if she HAD turned tue oven on) she's fine. This is among the least shocking/worrying/dangerous she's done Grin

MrsTrentReznor · 29/11/2016 06:55

I once bought muffins from Asda that turned out to be mouldy. They didn't even clear them from the shelves!

Ahickiefromkinickie · 29/11/2016 08:10

I saw blue mouldy bread in Tesco once.

And one time, their gluten free bread was a week out of date and not even reduced! Shock

I would have eaten the GF bread, tbf, that stuff would survive a nuclear explosion.

Inthenick · 29/11/2016 08:15

Tesco customer service is excellent at handling complaints in my experience. They refunded 3 items for me yesterday without blinking. They were things I'd bought in my online shop over the last 2 shops. All gone off although still in date. Got pissed off with the third thing so called them all in and instantly got £6.50 refunded.

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2016 08:17

Human error. It's not right but someone didn't spot it.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 29/11/2016 08:31

Well of course its potentially a biggie if you eat something past its use by date! But you (collective you) have to take responsibility for yourself at some point. Quite a lot of fuss on this thread for simple human error by a shop worker. We're not in Aleppo.

If you want long use by dates on your delivered food, try Ocado instead of Sainsburys. They are much better for this.

lostgirl77 · 29/11/2016 09:18

I would hardly describe it as 'quite a lot of fuss'

It's just a semi light hearted moan that my midnight feast was scuppered, and others similar experiences!

And actually it is a bit shit if staff can't competently check stock on the shelves and notice an out of date item, but I don't expect anyone to be lynched for it! Hmm
