Christmas party - to go or not to go

The company I work for was bought this year by a bigger company. Our company is a retail business, so a seven-day-a-week business. Our parent company is a weekday business.
This year we are all invited to travel to a big company Christmas party. I wanted to go and was planning to go but have now found out that as I am hourly paid I won't be paid on the day of the party. I am scheduled to work on that day as I always work that day of the week. All salaried staff scheduled to work that day will be paid. So in order to be paid I will have to stay behind to watch the shop.
AIBU to think this is discriminatory?

Christmas parties are awful anyway. Get the money and go out with your real friends.

You are right prettywoman, there is no way I'm going to go if all the others are getting paid. They'll probably only give me crumbs too.

I think I would clarify with HR from the parent company that that is what they intended to happen - it might well be that it hasn't occurred to the person organising the 'do'.

However, if it's retail, won't they have to leave a whole shift full of people in the shop ?

Seconded. Get paid and go out with some people you actually like. I never go to work dos, I get on ok with my colleagues but I spend 40 hours a week with the fuckers, the last thing I want to do is socialise with them as well!

I'm angling to skive my works Christmas party too. I don't want to pay for a meal with people I don't like or know. I'm using a babysitting problem as an excuse. I work in retail too but I work on my own and never see my colleagues.

God I would love to be able to miss the Christmas party but unfortunately as I'm the boss and also paying for it, I have to go

I think they are hell on earth especially for introverts like me.

I'm an introvert too and if I could get rid of Christmas parties forever, I'd be a happy bunny.

It's probably not op and is down to a difference in the contract of salaried and hourly paid staff. Worth raising though, to ask why.

Also if the majority of the hourly paid staff are women or are all women then it could be a case of indirect discrimination!

It discriminates against part time workers, and yes the majority of these are women. I would stress that I love parties but am not that fussed about going to this one. Whets irking me is that having worked four days a week for ten years in this company I don't have hecsame rights as a nine-to-fiver Monday-to-fridayer
