To want to buy a second home just 20 miles from our current home?

user1480355677 · 28/11/2016 18:00

When we were looking for our current home, we were torn between two areas and basically let the house decide so to speak, so which area had the perfect house for us. Still love where we live, love the house, the area, the community. But still have a hankering to live in this other location which is so quiet and peaceful.

We own 5 properties, 4 of which we rent out as holiday homes but none are in this other location. We are looking at buying another holiday home and a property has come up in this other location and I would absolutely love to live there.

Would it be completely crazy to own two homes just 20 miles apart? Our current home would be used monday to friday and the new home would be used at weekends and in the holidays (we're both teachers).

I just got a little bit sick in my mouth OP at " that's hardly my problem is it? We work hard for our money "

But no you're not being unreasonable to spend your hard earned cash however the heck you want but you are massively unreasonable and grotesque, for the above comment

Hello, my life is awesome and I've got a whole stack of cash to make it more awesome, should I? - OP

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/11/2016 18:28

YANBU to do whatever you like about houses.

YABU to assume it's hard work. It is always hard work AND good luck.

SpotTheDuck · 28/11/2016 18:28

Ok, leaving aside the morals of buying another home when there are so many families who can't....and leaving aside the total dickishness of suggesting that poorer people don't work hard....and trying just to answer your question.....if you can afford it, you want to, and you feel it would make you happy then I suppose do what you want.

I don't think a weekend/holiday home needs up actually be far away, it just needs to be in a different environment which it sounds like this one is

mydietstartsmonday · 28/11/2016 18:28

It is not the fault of the OP that people can not afford to buy their own house. If she is lucky enough to be able to do this and create security for her family , then so be it. Rather then blast one person what the government should do is cap private rents this would be a more effective way to curb the btl market. I hope all that flame do not rent a sc house for their holidays as that would be hypocritical

Frouby · 28/11/2016 18:32

It is partly her fault that lots of people cant afford to get on the property ladder. The btl and holiday homes sector is partially responsible for the housing market being as it is.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/11/2016 18:33

It is not the fault of the OP that people can not afford to buy their own house. 5, soon to be 6 properties (if you believe the OP) with one family living in them. Yep, kinda her fault.

WrongTrouser · 28/11/2016 18:35

I don't particularly want to get into a debate about btl or holiday cottages, but anyone who buys a second (or sixth) property is contributing to the situation where it is more difficult for other people to buy one house. Whether this is an ethical way to behave or not is another matter but the fact that people buying multiple properties contributes to the difficulty for others of getting on the housing ladder, I would have thought, is fairly uncontroversial.

EweAreHere · 28/11/2016 18:35

And no one else has worked hard for their money either....

TheProblemOfSusan · 28/11/2016 18:37

Sure, it's your money. By all means use your hard earned money to promote inequality and contribute to the lack of housing stock for other hard working families who don't have 6 houses already.

I bet it's super hard to have so much passive income. Poor sausage.

chocolateworshipper · 28/11/2016 18:42

That's nothing, my DH and I are both teaching assistants and we own SEVEN houses - one of which is in Elevenerife ...

Grin

Anyone reported this yet? It's a bit smelly IMO.

GahBuggerit · 28/11/2016 18:43

meh, i have loads of money and have never had to work hard.

only 5 properties? how sweet......

WrongTrouser · 28/11/2016 18:45

Rather then blast one person what the government should do is cap private rents this would be a more effective way to curb the btl market

The government is not going to do this though, is it, especially as so many MPs are btl landlords?

So given that they are not, it is up to individuals whether they chose to exploit the huge inequalities in the housing market or not. And if they do, I think other people are entitled to point out that those who do are adding to dire housing situation for, particularly, younger people.

shinynewusername · 28/11/2016 18:46

20 miles isn't far. Maybe you could build some sort of bridge between the two?

YouHadMeAtCake · 28/11/2016 18:47

GF Biscuit

ClopySow · 28/11/2016 18:47

Or a tunnel?

Northernlurker · 28/11/2016 18:49

Yes yabu and greedy. Holiday lets are potentially corrosive to societies and weekend homes are downright irresponsible. Hth.

PerspicaciaTick · 28/11/2016 18:50

5, soon to be 6, houses and only 1 (soon to be 0) with full-time residents?

oldlaundbooth · 28/11/2016 18:51

Notice that the OP isn't back yet...

chipsandgin · 28/11/2016 18:52

Are you both teachers at Hogwarts? Because if (and just imagine for a moment people this were real?) it would take some fucking magic to buy 5 houses on teachers salaries. Goady. As. Fuck.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 28/11/2016 18:53

Can you give me one of your houses?

I've been relatively good this year.

(worth a shot - you don't ask, you don't get, and all that...)

JurassicFart · 28/11/2016 18:53

We're teachers and have just the one house. We work 100-120 hours a week between us - where are all my extra bloody houses?!

Mrsmadevans · 28/11/2016 18:55

BUY IT your money your life enjoy yourself life is too short my dear

purplepebbles · 28/11/2016 18:57

I'm a teacher, but evidently not a hardworking one which is why I can't afford a house.

Don't care if you're BU or NBU, tbh. I think you're being goady though, and I'm annoyed I've risen to it. Bit knackered after wafting about round school like a workshy house tenant.
