Just inadvertently fed the DCs gin.

Sooo, we went to a Christmas market today at a place we visit often, afterwards we went to the farm-shop for some odds and sods and told the DC they could chose a soft drink to have with supper.

The shop is set up so alcoholic drinks are on a display on one side and soft drinks are on a smaller display opposite, posh fizzy drinks, fruit juice etc. They like Fentiman's rose lemonade and wanted to get a large 500ml bottle, but as they always argue about who gets most I suggested they get one of the smaller 275ml bottles each and they could have it with a straw at supper. All good.

We sit down for supper and they start drinking their lemonade and both proclaim 'It tastes a bit weird', I looked and it was the bloody Bloom Gin and Fentimans. Thing is, I know Fentimans do a pre-mixed drink with Bloom, I've had it before, the bottle is exactly the same, other than it does say Bloom Gin on the front, buuuuuttt, the drinks were with the soft-drinks, the bottles are the same, I wasn't paying that much attention because, why would I?

I'm not even sure what my AIBU is, I'll phone them tomorrow because I can only imagine it was a mistake when they were stocking the shelves, no harm was done and I'm not about to go all Daily Mail sad-face on them.

I was just a bit perturbed, what if a recovering alcoholic had picked it up, or a Muslim, or any number of people who don't drink for whatever reason?

Also my children think they are now drunk after imbibing all of 10ml and are pissing about instead of going to bed, so I guess that's why I'm a little bit irritated!

Seriously??

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/11/2016 22:36

No Flogging, but if Colegate suddenly brought out a brand of piles cream and put it with the toothpaste and kept the same branding, I imagine quite a few people would find their mouth-piles were suddenly cured.

I think you'll find the technical term for mouth piles is 'gob grapes' Grin

Just the thought has cheered me up

And yes, they will no doubt be going into school tomorrow with tall-tales of how mummy fed them gin and the ensuing antics.

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 27/11/2016 22:39

I think it's a fair point actually. Yes, the label does say gin, but only when you look closely at it. I've definitely made mistakes like buying coke with lemon instead of normal coke before because I was distracted by DC, tired after a long day etc and not really looking closely at labels.

They should put them in a separate place.

That said, I think most people would notice the taste of alcohol straight away and stop drinking if they didn't want it.

ageingrunner · 27/11/2016 22:39

It's easily done if you're a bit distracted and things look similar. There have been terrible cases of people drinking noxious chemicals that some dick had put in a soft drink bottle. It only takes a bit. Obviously you realise but it can be too late by then. Sorry to bring the thread down but this can happen if something is not as expected.

Overthinker2016 · 27/11/2016 22:40

Please take the award for the most middle class thread ever Grin

7SunshineSeven7 · 27/11/2016 22:41

Wait - so the bottle is different and it says BLOOM GIN in big capital letters (bigger than the rose lemonade bit). They can be told apart.

But you're going to complain about it because this is their fault somehow? Am I missing something here?

A lot of shops don't choose where they put their stock, a lot of the time they are given a plan sheet in which the product is pictured in place and this has to be replicated. Brands will pay to have their stock in a particular place in shops (for example, eye level) and mystery shoppers will come in to check this is being done correctly.

YABU - you gave them gin, its not going to kill them. Just be more careful next time so you don't make the same mistake again.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/11/2016 22:43

Which they did Bertie, and I am now reaping the benefit. But what if they hadn't had the rose lemonade and didn't know it tasted a bit off?

They expected liquid Turkish Delight. They got gin.

OP posts:
JigglyTuff · 27/11/2016 22:47

Of course they will! They will be telling the whole school how mummy deliberately got them drunk if they're anything like my DC. You're going to just have to style it out

Ignore people who said you should have read the label. It's pink, it's in the same bottle. I buy things that I buy regularly by looking at the packaging.

Farmmummy · 27/11/2016 22:48

Tbf op I've done exactly the same thing although luckily my really odd dd doesn't like lemonade so it was for me! I was really thirsty so swigged half the bottle on strong medication much to DHs hysterical amusement. Did finish it though as it was quite nice. Farm shop slightly horrified though as they had put it with the soft drinks not even realising themselves

MycatsaPirate · 27/11/2016 22:50

Ah give the op a break. Kids picked the bottles up, not her. She probably felt harrassed in the shop with her dh, the kids and trying to sort payment.

shit like this happens.

Let us know what social services say when they turn up tomorrow though won't you op? :o

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/11/2016 22:50

Aha Farm, Fentimans too?

Vindicated.

This episode will go down in your family folklore as long as social services don't get to hear about it Grin

ClarissaDarling · 27/11/2016 22:51

So far what I've taken from this thread is i now want gin and rose lemonade.

Overthinker2016 · 27/11/2016 22:52

Did you not think the drinks were slightly expensive?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/11/2016 22:54

Gin and rose lemonade is very good Clarissa

No Over, we spent £78 in total so wasn't noticed, it felt a bit more expensive that it should have, but not enough to notice too much.

Benedikte2 · 27/11/2016 22:55

There is a sizeable number of people who cannot read or write or who have limited sight and who could be fooled by the similarity.

MsMarvel · 27/11/2016 22:56

I actually think the bottles look really similar! And as I didn't know before reading this that fentimans did an alcoholic mix, I would see fentimans and assume soft drink.

Its definately worth contacting the place to let them know, as I'm pretty sure they will be completely unaware. I don't think it warrants a complaint to the place, just a call to let them know. But I don't think the OP was ever planning on complaining.

Sadik · 27/11/2016 22:57

Am I the only person reading this thread who now wants gin with rose lemonade?

iwasbornaunicorn · 27/11/2016 22:58

You've made me remember the time my hubby brushed his teeth with antiseptic cream 😂😂😂 the tube looked very similar to our usual toothpaste.

I'm sure when I watched a history programme recently that they were so many accidental poisonings (I think in the Victorian era) because bottles all used to be the same that the government bought in rules about making the dangerous stuff look different.

That gin looks good 🍸

PleaseNotTrump · 27/11/2016 22:58

I love the Rose Lemonade - if I recognised the branding without my glasses on I would have bought it too. Grrr on your behalf.

EBearhug · 27/11/2016 22:59

We were round friends one summer's day when I was a child. "Kids, if you're thirsty, there's lemonade in here!" called one of the parents from the kitchen. We'd been running around, so I was quite thirsty, plus fizzy drinks were a bit of a treat. I ran in and took one of the glasses and took a massive swig.

On reflection, it wasn't usual for our parents to have poured it out ready for us, and neat gin which is waiting to have lemonade added does taste different from lemonade...

They'll be fine. I turned out totally normal, after all! Wink

I do agree they should be shelved separately though.
