I'm in South Hants playmobil - you are decidedly not conveniently located!

I'm 40 and learnt to crochet earlier this year after being a knitter for a few years. My local craft shop does beginner's courses every few months and I found it much clearer with an actual person. Once I'd got the basics, YouTube has been a source of inspiration.

It is naff to care whether crochet and knitting are naff or not

Nothing naff about knitting. I started learning about 6 weeks ago and am totally hooked. My original aim was to knit a Christmas stocking. I relied on utube tutorials and a couple of books from the library. Pimterest is a good source of free patterns. I am now working on a Nordic style cusion cover (just taking a quick break to catch up on mumsnet) using super chunky wool and 7mm needles so progress is quite fast however I have not got the hang avoiding getting the wool twisted when working in two colours.

Not naff at all. I learned to knit in my 20s when I spent a long long time on 1:1 observations with 2 ladies on the elderly ward I was on. Together we made a very long scarf in a fabulous array of colours full of dropped stitches (my bits). I've still got it and everytime I look at it I smile.

I taught myself to crochet a year and a bit ago and have never looked back. It relaxes me and I make beautiful blankets and the like. I'm 39

Anatidae · 27/11/2016 19:51

Loads of places do workshops - Toft just did a learn to crochet one at the natural history museum. Google London yarn shops. Loop are really nice if you're in London.
I taught myself in my twenties - absolutely love knitting and crochet and sewing. It's so relaxing. Go for it.

4-5mm needles easiest to start with by the way - huge ones are a tad unwieldy

MissElphabaThropp · 27/11/2016 19:55

Should have said, I'm a horrible knitter, but when I've got all current projects (2 blankets,Christmas wreath, bag and embroidery card) if I don't capitulate and do the next Attic 24 CAL then knitted socks are my next challenge.

JaceLancs · 27/11/2016 19:59

I learnt to knit at primary school but in my 40s I started knitting properly as in making garments
I gradually progressed onto cable and fairisle and keep stretching myself with ever more complicated things
In my 50s I taught myself to crochet using books and YouTube and am now trying to build up confidence to start crocheting harder items

AngryGinger · 27/11/2016 20:02

Not at all! I'm 27 and currently teaching myself. Using a combination. Of YouTube videos and wiki how

SuzieQ99 · 27/11/2016 20:02

Go for it. You are never too old to take up a new hobby. Enjoy it!
