AIBU Sudocream

Was visiting a family member today and had to change DDs (4 months) nappy... As always, I put sudocream on her mini and bottom. Said family member commented 'You got enough sudocream, she doesn't need it. Bit OTT don't you think? I said no, it's fine, we do it all time.

AIBU to think that sudocream is a barrier cream, to prevent nappy rash in the first place rather than to treat it? My DD has never had nappy rash so far! Angry

YABU to use Sudocrem on every nappy change if DD doesn't need it IMO. I have never used it on 12 mo DS's bottom and he's never had a rash.

But YANBU to expect family members to keep their opinions to themselves when it comes to your parenting choices. What business is it of theirs how you change a nappy?

Childminder and expert nappy changer of 17 years experience here Grin

Like children, bottoms come in different degrees of sensitivity. Some will suit sudocrem, some will find it stings and makes matters worse. Bepanthan suits some, as does metanium, Johnsons, Waitrose bottom butter... I have even heard that Estee Lauder lipbalm is excellent (but probably out of most people's price range!).
It's a matter of finding the right one for your baby. Plain old vaseline will also work as a barrier.
If you use too much of any product, it will clog up the nappy: needs to be thinly applied.

If you're finding that nappy rash isn't clearing and is more around the genital area, suspect thrush and try canestan for nappy rash or pop to the doctor or pharmacist.

Lord, what a thing to be an expert in - just doesn't have the same ring as "Solicitor here!", does it? GrinGrin

I personally hate sudocrem. There is a reason we don't use it in hospital for patients needing a barrier cream- it's pretty crap imo.

However, if it works for you it just isn't an issue and no ones business.

If it works, do it. Bloody love sudocrem, had it clear a real stubborn, nasty rash that yellow metanium didn't touch.

I haven'y used Sudocream on my DD, got a bit put off by the list of ingredients. I'm a massive fan of Bepanthen (the nappy care ointment for daily use, there is another one for nappy rash) and I always stock up whenever I see it on offer.

It's also great on sore nipples btw, although you need to wipe it off before feeding.
