That Selfridges have 20% off all candles including Jo Malone and Diptyque.

No need to thank me 😂 (Put my order in before I posted just incase there was a rush!)

Hate Yankee candles. And don't they create so much smoke too? Ugh, can't bear it.

SinglePringle · 26/11/2016 08:17

True Grace, Neom, Diptyque or Jo Loves are lovely. Some of the M&S are also good (grapefruit and ginger).

Yankee are awful, twee, naff, migraine inducing excuses for a candle. The names alone put me off.

Kennington · 26/11/2016 08:18

I like a candle but they are a really terrible source of indoor air pollution. Along with those plug in things too.

icanteven · 26/11/2016 08:21

True Grace is wonderful - try Sacristy or Library for something unusual.

Wolpertinger · 26/11/2016 08:21

With Yankee candles it's a race to see if I'll get a migraine or an asthma attack first.

I can't go in my local garden centre as the way is barred by their giant Yankee candle display in the entrance - I can see the plants in the distance but just can't make it over to them.

Evil things.

LaContessaDiPlump · 26/11/2016 08:47

I don't suppose anyone knows offhand whether/which companies use animal-free products? I know that Yankee Candles are actually vegan-friendly (whoo hoo) but am trawling through the Jo Malone site and they are noticeably vague on what their actual candles are made of. Emailing them now, although I am not hopeful.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/11/2016 09:04

Neom are mostly vegan - it depends where you stand on Beeswax. Soy wax needs to be stabilised and this is often done with stearic acid if I recall rightly otherwise they don't burn evenly. neom's ingredients are almost 100% organic and not tested on animals at any stage in the process. I used to stock them in my shop and they are still one of my favourite brands.

TheHauntedFishtank · 26/11/2016 09:23

Dammit fenella I just went to have a look at the Oliver Bonas candles and have now bought a purse.

LaContessaDiPlump · 26/11/2016 09:25

Beeswax isn't generally considered to be vegan I'm afraid. Apparently stearic acid can be animal-derived or plant-derived, although the plant-derived stuff often comes from palm oil and is thus linked to rainforest destruction Confused

Maybe I should just focus on soy-based candles - any recommendations there? Northumbrian Candleworks have a nice website but am a bit unwilling to take a punt on an unrated online shop Grin

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/11/2016 09:46

www.vegan.com/candles/

List here

Scribblegirl · 26/11/2016 09:49

My people!!

Love Jo Malone but agree Oliver Bonas can be an adequate stand in. MIL just text and asked what I'd like for Christmas... I may just send her a link to this thread Grin except the idea of being MN outed to MIL makes me want to be sick

LaContessaDiPlump · 26/11/2016 09:51

Thanks Lady - I've seen that list before but it seems a bit America-centric. I was hoping for some UK-based recommendations if there are any?

Giselaw · 26/11/2016 09:58

Neom products have been popping in and out of stock at tk maxx and homesense for a couple of months now (mostly because people like me swoop in and buy them out quickly Grin) The big three wick ones are £24.99 instead of £45 elsewhere, I think the medium candles were £15ish and small ones were £8. Also got a room spray for £10. If there isn't one near you, keep checking their website - currently only couple reed diffusers are in stock online.

Giselaw · 26/11/2016 10:01

La contessa, I haven't smelled these, but this company Ormonde Jayne was started by a local woman and everything is produced in London (so doesn't fall under the big brand umbrella like este Lauder, who test on animals for the China market). I've only tried their perfumes but apparently she started in candles.

LaContessaDiPlump · 26/11/2016 12:56

Thanks Giselaw - sounds like an excuse for me to wander into town and visit tkmaxx! Hurrah Grin

LaContessaDiPlump · 27/11/2016 23:14

Just to bump this:

I did indeed wander into TKMaxx yesterday and investigated their candle offerings. I picked up a citrussy one from Arran Aromatics for the princely sum of £7 (expensive for me!), as it said it was suitable for veggies/vegans too. It seems to burn quite slowly but also has a lovely scent that spreads around the house. Will buy from them again!

Giselaw · 28/11/2016 13:41

I just had a lookie on their website and the neom tranquility big candle is in stock for 24.99 plus free shipping today only.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 28/11/2016 15:47

I mentioned my passionate dislike for Yankee candle a few years ago and was told off

I like Parks candles and they sell them cheaply in TX Maxx

I also add a few drops of essential oil onto the warm wax of plain candles very cheap way to have very nice smelling candles

jumpjumpformylove · 28/11/2016 17:15

Came to this thread too late to get 20% off the Miller Harris candles!

I've had MUJI candles and they were good for scent, i thought they were good value for money.

NormHonal · 28/11/2016 18:46

As for their candles, Oliver Bonas shower gel is also a decent substitute for Molton Brown, and a fraction of the price.

You're welcome.

MissVictoria · 28/11/2016 18:47

I love yankee candles, but clearly i'm a cheap heathen :P I must be missing out on the real good stuff, but my budget barely stretches to few yankee wax tarts. (At least they last for ages!)

ZaZathecat · 28/11/2016 18:54

Omg I'm not a candle-ista but I've judt bought Yankees for 3 relatives for Xmas. I hope they won't think I hate them! Blush

glueandstick · 28/11/2016 19:33

Another top tip is to pay the £15 postage for the year at Selfridges and then you can order muji etc and not pay for postage! All those brands under one heading.
