What tv series can I watch on Netflix or Amazon prime?

I never watch TV so I don't know what's good. Feeling sorry for myself. My mum died yesterday and I need something I can really get into to try and take my mind off things. Anyone got any suggestions? Quite like scary or mystery type things. Tia

So sorry for your loss.

I also recommend Stranger Things.

If you like things that are set in the eighties, there is a good series on Amazon called Red Oaks.

Narcos on Netflix is probably one of the best things I've watched for a long time.

Oooh, and The Night Of, that is gripping.

I may watch too much TV...

Leanback · 24/11/2016 22:51

Another for stranger things! Definitely fills the horror/mystery bill.

I think the early seasons of walking dead are on amazon prime? In may be wrong but if I'm not I'd also definitely recommend that.

SortAllTheThings · 24/11/2016 23:11

I'd avoid Broadchurch, at least for now. It's very good, but devastating. Not what you need

gleegeek · 24/11/2016 23:17

Thinking of youFlowers
I'm going to go against the grain here - when mum died I got the most comfort from weepy films. I really bottled up my feelings and stayed in control publicly but needed an outlet for all those tears!
It's such a tough time OP x

mum2Bomg · 24/11/2016 23:18

I've just got into The Fall - it's on Amazon prime and amazing

Vulty · 24/11/2016 23:25

Very sorry for your loss, here are some of my favourites, very gripping most of them.

Dexter
Prison Break
Wentworth - Like Orange Is The New Black but far better imo
Pretty Little Liars
The Following
The Killing - amazing!
Breaking Bad
Stranger Things
Glitch
Being Human
Sons of Anarchy
Sherlock

AmeliaLeopard · 24/11/2016 23:40

Lucifer. It has been years since there was a programme where I looked forward to new episodes. I watched season 1 in two sessions.
Stranger Things is good too.

BeauHeaux · 24/11/2016 23:54

Sorry about your Mum.

Stranger things is brill in a light gripping way. Totally recommend!

laurzj82 · 25/11/2016 21:45

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions and kind words. Just feel numb today. I've got loads to get me started! Might suggest a few to my dad too as he is just lost :-( Thanks again

Sorry for your loss. Stranger things, westworld and narcos are all excellent

Huldra · 25/11/2016 22:32

Stranger Things, great and can be watched with older kids., depending on how they handle such things.
Falling Skies. Aliens have arrived and it's a small group of humans against all odds, bit like The Walking Dead. Like above suitable for older kids. I'm surprised that people don't talk about this one more.
Black Mirror, stand alone stories by Charlie Brooker, you can go wrong with Mr Brooker.
The Returned. The dead come back. Go for the French with sub titles, watched the first US version and it was crap.
Hemlock Grove, has werewolves and vampires.
Bloodlines. Not fantasy. Family gather for an event and secrets slowly come out, decisions are made that have ramifications. It all goes wrong..
Breaking Bad. Like above life is normal and then decision are made and life goes wrong.
Walking Dead if you like Zombie gore. It's great.
Freaks and Geeks. Set in 80s high school, feel good, funny, tweens and teens can watch. Its what we watch on a Sunday morning.
I Zombie. Basically a cop show. Very comic book, a bit silly but a little darker stuff underneath.
Lucifer. Another maverick cop show but the maverick is Satan taking a break from hell. Not 100 % confinced on this one, not a binge watcher for me but still entertaining enough.
American Horror Story. Really enjoyed the first two series.
Mushi Shi. If you want something a little different. It's anime with subtitles. They are dreamlike short episodes.
Alpha House. Comedy about political Life in Washington. Stars John Goodman.

Watched one episode of Orange is the New Black and that's very intriguing.
Mr Robot. Not watched one yet but have it on laptop for my next trip. Teen son keeps on about it, something to do with hacking.

OrchardDweller · 25/11/2016 22:37

Have a look a Frankie and Grace

fourcorneredcircle · 25/11/2016 22:38

Jonathan Creek
Sherlock

Good for people that like to figure out the "mystery". Each episode is standalone too so you can zone in and out as you need to :)

Wookiecookies · 25/11/2016 22:42

Breaking bad
Better call saul (off shoot of breaking bad)
Narcos
Stranger things

Heard good things about peaky blinders.

Wookiecookies · 25/11/2016 22:43

Oh yes! vulty said 'the following' I second that.

Mouikey · 25/11/2016 22:46

Lucifer
Grace and Frankie
Stranger things
Designated survivor (new and pretty good)
Good Girls Revolt
Sons of Anarchy
Last Man on Earth (AMAZING!)
American Horror Story
Walking Dead
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Not sure if 'the affair' is on either but it is brilliant

Sorry for your loss xx

GinAndSonic · 25/11/2016 22:50

Probably not what you are looking for but I really rate Avatar: the last airbender and the sequel, The Legend of Korra, both animations which are inspired by anime. They were made by nickelodeon but despite being kids programmes they deal with a lot of stuff (war, disability, family issues, etc) in a really good way. Plus the animation is stunning and the dialogue and storyline are actually good too. Lots of humour in there too. And i want a sky bison.
Both are included on amazon prime video so free to watch if you have prime.

Yes I'm a giant nerdy loser who loves animations

MatchyMatcha · 25/11/2016 22:51

Mr Robot
The Crown

jimthecat · 25/11/2016 22:56

I'm so sorry about your mum.

My mum died suddenly a couple of years ago. My sister and I watched Girls back to back. Not mysterious of thrillery in the slightest, but so detached from our day to day life, yet somewhat real life; it was refreshing and a real relief.

ValaMalDoran · 25/11/2016 22:57

Once upon a time - messed up fairytales, quite dark but very good and the fairy tale bits remove it from reality for me even when it's sad.
Orphan black - sci-fi with some horror elements, the acting is phenomenal but the first episode is rough as it starts with a suicide (that's not a spoiler btw before anyone hangs me, that info is in the 2 line intro on Netflix and is the whole story set up)
Castle - very funny crime drama.
Community - just a great comedy about a total random mash of people thrown together.

Huldra · 25/11/2016 22:58

Penny Dreadful was good enough. It's one where I enjoyed the first series, then my interest diminished.maybe I watched them too closely together.

Billions. Big city stock trading, you slowly get sucked in to ths story but you have to concentrate.

Please someone help me with this one. It's set in the UK,, short series. There is a murder and it's told from the view point of different people involved. The guy borrows his Dads taxi, picks up a girl??? I really enjoyed it.

Sorry for your loss OP.

lougle · 25/11/2016 23:04

I'm so sorry.

Dexter
Bosch
24
House of Cards
The Good Wife
Bad Men (about a 60s advertising agency)
House
White collar

Huldra · 25/11/2016 23:05

Answering my own question
The Night Of is the name of the show, can't remember which service w watched it on but it's very good.

SenecaFalls · 25/11/2016 23:12
Flowers

Another vote for The Crown, lush drama about the early days of the Queen's reign.

karigan · 26/11/2016 08:59

Sorry about your mum Flowers

Luke Cage (gritty superhero vs mob series) and Orange is the New Black (rich upper class woman sent to American prison- latino vs white power gangs- the culture shock through her eyes. Every episode you get a new character's life story so you see how they ended up in prison.)

Both are (presumably!) Very removed from your real life so you can just get sucked into caring about mob bosses or prison romances. :p
