....for thinking that I wouldn't employ Granny Murray as a childminder without a psychiatric report?

I'm also wondering how a train buffet worker can afford childcare

It may sound like a daft complaint - it's a kids' show after all - but it is giving them an unfairly rose-tinted view of what work is like. And it undermines the laudable premise of the programme (to show children that we are at work, which is important, but still thinking of them all day).

It's similar to the way soaps portray people being able to "get a job" with their uncle's garage or sweeping the street right outside where they live, or something - I always thought that sort of thing gave ammo to people wanting to portray all the unemployed as "feckless" and scrounging.

I can't watch it despite DD and DS loving it - I'm scarred after seeing her (in her Isa off Still Game) mode completely in the buff and drunkenly up for it. The image is burned into my very consciousness. I can't close my eyes at night.

DaisyMOO · 15/02/2007 11:19

Blimey, are we supposed to think of them all day If I ever get the chance to escape it daylight hours I purposely don't think of what they're likely to be gettin gup to

I find it a bit too worthy. Balamory challenged stereotypes in an excellent and totally unconscious way. This challenges stereotypes in a really eager and in-your-face way and causes over-reactive reeling against the message they are so earnestly trying to give -

"YES!!!! You CAN be a doctor, and a black woman!!"

Yep, we know.

God, I can't believe I'm having this conversation.

UnquietDad · 15/02/2007 11:30

Balamory, the most ethnically-diverse destination in the Western Isles.

I know what you mean, though - dd just accepts that Penny is in a wheelchair, doesn't find it strange; it's probably made her less likely to point/stare at disabled people when out.

Taking a dog to a childminders? What's that all about? Does anyone actually do that?

3LoveHeartsAndNoMore · 15/02/2007 11:34

found it now..."me too"....have never had to endure it yet....my Kids are more into Nick Jnr, lol!

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 15/02/2007 11:35

I love Balamory. DD seems to have gone off it a bit, though.

At the moment it is 'Little Einsteins', 'Come Outside' (Now, Aunty Mabel would definitely beat Granny Murray in a fight) and, more subversively 'Spongebob' who rock her world.

She seems to get into mesmerising types of programmes with real-life footage. She used to love 'Our Planet' too, but has also wandered off from that. What a fickle bunch they are.

She never entertained Granny Murray at all, though.

I can't cope with the mystic 'thought for the day' when the parent leaves

And how the hell does a single mum night shift bus cleaner (who always seems to be nicking off on the job) afford overnight childcare for Kai? That is some WTC payment there.

How does Ofsted feel about operating a childcare and a dog sitting service at the same time? I'm sure Dr Juno and Chuck from the Riverboat band are an item. (hey, no worries there, just my observation). And how the hecky peck does Rudi not get ripped off in his work? (and his price for potatoes is indecently expensive)

I've been concerned by the workings of Me Too for a while.

grouchyoscar · 15/02/2007 11:39

Balamory...Had a conversation with a neurology registrar about that (during an appointment, don't ask) She used to work on the Isle of Skye and said 'I never saw a member of the ethnic community from 1 month to the next'

Balamory...more ethnically diverse than London!
