My original ones are the pans now sold as John Lewis Classic stainless steel. They are over 15 years old. One of them the lining has recently worn through and it's to be relegated to a plant pot or storage. They have taken a lot of punishment though, all kinds of hobs, living with other people who weren't careful with them, goodness knows how many successions of badly burnt things and brillo padding and soaking in washing powder, never any care for what utensils are used and two are still fine. Their price rather horrifies me now but if £99 for 3 is your price range I would certainly recommend them, including if you are giving them to students or in the situation fourcornered describes, they are definitely robust enough for that.

I've also got Le Creuset stainless steel plans, and they work brilliantly on our Gag induction hob. I used to have All-Clad, and they were only so-so.

We have a set of Le Creuset pans which I love. We bought them when we moved in 9 years ago so they're pretty well-used but still fab. The milk pan is especially cute.

DH favours some copper-bottomed thing when he cooks but I can't get along with it at all.

Tefal Ingenio here too, we got them as a wedding present and I luffs them. They take up less space in the cupboards and I love that I can cook the night before, stick the plastic lid on them and pop them in the fridge.

A big silver ine with two small handles and a little silver one with a larger pan handle... Both are 10+ years old.

Procook do fantastic pans, I just got a set of 10 pieces for our hot plate and induction hobs. We got the professional range which is stainless steel. Good thick flat bottom, brilliant non stick coating on the frying pans too.

Meyer are fab, have outlasted everything else I have, including Le Creuset. Have a basic stainless steel set which clean up beautifully and cook/look stylish. Also have a Tefal frying pan which is excellent for pancakes and omlettes x

Absolutely 100% the Le Creuset stainless steel 3 ply ones, quite expensive at circa £300 but they are amazing! They seem to be bomb proof, they go through the dishwasher, I only have to cook on low and give a lovely even heat.

The pans make making a white sauce so easy! No sticking and fantastic heat distribution. I could go on all day about the pans! Love them.

They are quite heavy but have a useful handle on the opposite side to the main handle to help with carrying or pouring.

Buy them!

Ikea Medalj

We've had them for years (not even sure if they do them anymore) but they are bombproof. If the current range are half as good I'd highly recommend them.

Ikea 365. Fabulous quality, heavy based pans suitable for all hobs. Great price too.

It depends on where you keep them, but it suits us best to have ones designed to stack. We've got two sets and the ones that don't stack area a pita.

LeCreuset - four saucepans and three casseroles of varying sizes, plus three frying pans - all a mixture of engagement and wedding presents so around 20-25 years old when they were more affordable. There are lots of good suggestions on here and it looks like a sound investment is what needs to be made. You get what you pay for.

Lakeland ceramic bottomed. I have the skidded wok and several of the milk pans. Completely non stick and dishwasher safe. I love them and wish the range was bigger.

Ooooh my fave proper heavy duty saucepans are my Raymond blanc stainless steel analog pans. Then I have small French enamel pans for beans or peas etc. A cheap ikea griddle pan, and a le crueset heavy casserole dish. I have a huge flat frying pan, too - I have never found a standard set that has all that I want so I prefer to mix and match
