Halfords charging to fit a bulb?

Quite thrilled to have an AIBU although it's not very exciting...
My car needed two new bulbs so today I drove 10 miles to the nearest Halford's store, which is a big one. I could have bought these bulbs locally but remembered the Halford's advert which said that they would fit the bulbs for free. However, at the store they wanted £8 to fit the bulbs. I just watched the advert again and the exact words were "Buy a new bulb and we'll fit it on the spot". Definitely no mention of a charge. Quite annoyed at the deception. AIBU?

Hahaha! Tremendous.

Pretty much everyone but two people think you are BU, but you go with them and say you knew you were right.

AIBU at its finest.

It would never occur to me to think that the ad implies that it is a free service, I don't think it's misleading at all, they're just saying that you don't need to make an appointment.

Some cars are a PITA to change a bulb, £8 is a bargain. Some cars are ridiculously easy to change a bulb on and £8 is a lot to pay in that situation.

I had an Alfa it took about 20 mins to get to the bulb and fit it, of course I expected a charge.

More to the point I googled it first to check the charge. Halfords Car Bulb Fitting Service - £5-£8 for fitting, obviously plus whatever the cost of the bulb is.

aw, no need to be catty. She's being wry. As a means of admitting that maybe YW(maybe)BU, I like it.

And thank you for your opinions, 2kids and Theoretician (I knew I was right). because 2 people in agreement and almost 50 who think YABU means you were right

The nearside bulbs in my old car were so simple to do . The offside bulbs were a total ballache (because of the positioning of the washer bottle and other stuff).

After DH spending AGES swearing at the offside bulb one day, we realised that the fiver that Halfords charge (plus the extra £3 on the bulb compared to the little motor factor that we usually get bulbs from) was worth it in terms of time/stress/scraped knuckles...but only on the offside! Nearside ones we did ourselves, took about 30 seconds.

Yabvvvvu. You paid extra to fit the bulb. Theres big signs inside my local halford saying that.

PhilODox · 19/11/2016 22:38

To change my headlamp bulbs you have to take the front wheel off, as the access to the headlamp is inside the wheel arch (how stupid!).
I always get them fitted, but wouldn't dream of expecting it for free. A bulb is about £7, but the time for a mechanic to remove the wheel, replace the bulb and replace the wheel- how could I expect them to work for free?

I changed my car bulb last year. It took me about an hour with the car manual and YouTube, but I did it. It was pretty tricky. But afterwards I felt amazing. I think I was so proud I talked about it for weeks to everyone I knew! I would never pay someone- the pleasure it gave me to do it myself was priceless Grin

Last time I needed headlights I baulked at Halford cost and got H to do it. Took him 2 hours, scraped knuckles and he fucked up one side. Was quite happy to pay the Halford chap this time round as a result. Rear bulbs, no problem, easy access. Headlights though vary by car, some are much easier than others!

BackforGood · 19/11/2016 22:56

YABU.
Of course there's a charge. On my last car, lightbulbs were a nightmare to get to, so a fixed charge like that would be a bargain. I've had cars in the past where it was a lot easier, but I can't understand why anybody would think a company would employ staff to do work for you for free. Confused

YABU.

If a real estate agency has an ad that says 'we'll sell your house', do you think that means for free?
