To think that when more people than ever are having to use

The Royal Family should pay for their own fucking renovations on the palace. It makes me so mad, we supposedly have a deficit so bad that disabled people are being declared fit for work 10 days before they die from their condition.

Something is very wrong. Don't tell me they bring in loads of revenue from tourism. Think about the cost of security and police protection they already have that is funded by the tax payer.

To think that this is at least the 2-3 thread on the same topic.
It's necessary work. Quit moaning.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/11/2016 21:09

Happy to pay for it. And think the nation should.

anyoldname76 · 19/11/2016 21:10

look at it from a different angle, British trades will be getting a boost. im not a royalist, i dont live in london, but it would be a huge mistake to let Buckingham palace fall into disrepair, its a major tourist attraction.

SoftSheen · 19/11/2016 21:15

Buckingham palace is an important national monument and tourist attraction, so of course we should pay for it. The money will go to British firms and will likely provide years of employment to many people, so it is not being 'lost'.

sall74 · 19/11/2016 21:16

Actually Buckingham Palace isn't even in the top 20 UK tourist attractions, so the argument that it brings in tourist income doesn't really hold up.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 19/11/2016 21:19

Doesn't 'hold up' just because it's not in some top 20?

Inthenick · 19/11/2016 21:19

Another way of looking at it is that the royals will not be getting this money, the nations landmarks will directly get it and indirectly a whole army of architects, builders, specialist tradespeople, project managers, supply companies etc.....exactly the people who at times are struggling to make end meet, will have a solid job for an extended period of time.

Win win.

harderandharder2breathe · 19/11/2016 21:21

They're national monuments which should be preserved

Yabu

gillybeanz · 19/11/2016 21:22

It's not the fault of Royalty though.
Government decided to make the cuts to welfare, we aren't thatt important to them, I'm afraid.
The revenue government receive for our taxes should be used for welfare, NHS and schools, but their priorities lie elsewhere.

GlacindaTheTroll · 19/11/2016 21:29

"Doesn't 'hold up' just because it's not in some top 20?"

And it never will be. Because it is a workplace, and so much of it is not open to paying visitors when in use for its primary functions relating to the head of state's duties. So it's annual total is bound to be low.

Woodacorn · 19/11/2016 21:34

The the UK owns the Royal palaces not the queen. We are just maintaining our heritage. The Royal family brings in much more money to the country than we spend on it.
It makes financial sense to refurbish the palaces.

Sparlklesilverglitter · 19/11/2016 21:34

Something is very wrong with it OP I Absouletly agree. But people always throw out the they bring lots of tourism, tell that to the people in food banks and the homeless on the streets as the government give millions of tax to rich queen & family while they suffer.
It really is bloody disgusting!

EatTheCake · 19/11/2016 21:39

I Absouletly agree with you OP

I work with 18-25 year old that have been kicked out of home/ left the cafe system/ had problems with drug addictions/ suffer from mental illness. And I have to fight to find these youngester hostels, support etc as there just isn't enough finding and the bastards keep cutting it.

But as long as the fucking royals are ok in there palace, fucking screw everyone else. It makes me sick

Peregrina · 19/11/2016 21:42

They could easily decamp to Windsor permanently and only use BH as offices and for state banquets.

EdithWeston · 19/11/2016 21:44

Nearly of BP is offices, state reception rooms (and staff quarters) . So no change required.

I doubt moving HMQ and husband out of their apartments would really make much difference to the costs of the building.

Sara107 · 19/11/2016 21:53

Does it belong to the Queen as part of her personal estate, or does it belong to the nation and is used by the monarch as an official residence? If it belongs to her she should stump up ( the reason it is so expensive is that the maintenance has been scrimped since the 1950s). If it belongs to the nation the taxpayer should pay. Wait til the £3 billion renovation of the Palace of Westminster has to happen!!!

Flatbox · 19/11/2016 21:55

I would have thought this could have been financed by opening up Buckingham palace or other royal properties more often throughout the year. I don't know what they own but I would be surprised if their weren't buildings/collections that the public don't have access to that many people would be willing to pay substantial amounts to see. I think the government should look at how the royal possessions could be used to make this self funding.

IAmNotAMindReader · 19/11/2016 22:34

If it's in such a state, knock it down. I cannit condone the stance that the place is a national treasure when up and down the country local councils with local historical treasures if their own are being told to suck it up and that there's no money in the pot to preserve them.

IAmNotAMindReader · 19/11/2016 22:34

*cannot

Kai1977 · 19/11/2016 23:18

It doesn't need to be a workplace for the monarch nor an official building for their events because there's no need for a monarchy.

And if it was open year round to the public, yes perhaps it would need more upkeep, but there's no need for prices to drop dramatically just because a Queen doesn't live there. Hampton Court Palace seems to survive and I don't believe a monarch has lived there in a few years... (I also believe it's a lot older than Buckingham Palace).

Kai1977 · 19/11/2016 23:20

And British trade wouldn't lose out if the Queen didn't live there, they'd still get paid to maintain it through the revenue of having it open year round.

Manumission · 19/11/2016 23:28

You'll have a long wait if you're hoping for a republic kai. Brits are so complacent. Maybe in William's reign.

Peregrina · 19/11/2016 23:32

Don't they have a large art collection, which could be put on display, and could raise money?

IMO the problem is not that the place needs work doing on it, but that the work is being done at a time when the rest of us are being told to live with austerity. If it had been done at a time when the country was prospering, no one would have batted an eyelid.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/11/2016 23:33

I can't argue with you, op. You're 110% right. I'd rather my taxes go to the poor disabled sick unemployed ect.
instead of those born with a diamond spoon in their mouths.

lottieandmia · 19/11/2016 23:38

Well quite Peregrina. It's kind of like how the government was proposing to cut tax credits at the same time as giving tax cuts because of austerity. Wait, what?!
