Incandescent with rage - lost luggage.

Pipistrelle40 · 19/11/2016 13:45

Sitting here in the same clothes I have been wearing for the last 36 hours. My suitcase is lost somewhere in the Middle East. Just phoned the airline and asked what was happening and they jabbered something and then slammed the phone down on me. Not responding to emails so have taken to Twitter in the hopes of some response.

AIBU to be absolutely livid.

I have nothing constructive to add but "incandescent with rage" is one of my favourite phrases, good work! Grin

devondream · 20/11/2016 20:52

I travelled to the UK a few years ago with 2 very young children.
Our luggage was lost and we were told we could receive it on the last night of a 5 day trip. Which was not a lot of use.

The BA guy gave me a paper saying they would reimburse me for all items and clothes needed for 5 days.

I was reimbursed around GBP 500.

QueenMortificado · 20/11/2016 20:52

Doobig that's contrary to my experience, I was covered for "essentials" up to the cost of £1k for my delayed luggage

Doobigetta · 20/11/2016 20:55

On the way home, QueenM? Who covered it? The airline, or your own insurance?

QueenMortificado · 20/11/2016 21:03

On the way out there. BA covered it, although they suggested i claimed through my insurance as the amount I could claim would be higher but they had a £1k limit so I did it through them

Got back all my credit card fees too

QueenMortificado · 20/11/2016 21:04

I misread your post Doo, I now see you said on the way back. Apologies

StarsandSparkles · 20/11/2016 21:06

greentureen my auntie and uncle flew with them to malaga earlier in the year and were delayed over 24hrs with no explaination. She shook her head when i told her who my gran, grandpa and wee sister were flying with

Catsize · 20/11/2016 21:11

Wrangling with Easyjet after being left with no luggage earlier this year for our weekend away. They want to pay £100 (or £125 if Easyjet vouchers) for a c.£280 loss. Not to mention the inconvenience of having to find a shop open for clothes and nappies at 10pm in Iceland, the petrol on the 1hr 45 round trip to get them etc. We were only there for the weekend and thought we'd treat ourselves to a luggage in the hold to save wrestling with the number of bags we usually do plus 2 small children. It was meant to be a de-stress!

Pilotswife, expressions used were slightly tongue in cheek. Maybe my sense of humour is missed by the more dour members of MN.

And it was the rudeness of the person I spoke to on the phone that annoyed me more than anything.

Honestly it happens all the time in the Middle East. My bags have been delayed because they couldn't get them onto our plane as they didn't give enough time between transfers, queue always getting our luggage the next day - no compo ever but we always get them to deliver to our home via taxi Hmm Happened on at least 4 occasions with a large international carrier.

MauiWest · 21/11/2016 07:23

"Incandescent with rage" and "absolutely livid" - wow, how would you respond to a real aviation mishap ?!

Hmm

there's always one.

Hand luggage allowance is limited, and we all know the restrictions, so lost luggage is never fun for anyone.

BikeRunSki · 21/11/2016 07:26

Interesting that Malaga had come up a few times. The only time my luggage has ever gone missing was flying into Malaga. We were on a Mountainbiking holiday. Bikes had to be partially dismantled. Bikes arrived, but the bag with pedals, chains and tools to rebuild the bikes arrived 3 days later!

Ironically, we used to fly to
Norway once or twice a year, often with bikes, on KLM, who have/had a terrible reputation in Stavanger and nothing ever went astray.

Are clean pants and a change of clothes 'just in case' part of the restrictions?

ohdearme1958 · 21/11/2016 08:29

Pipi, the person who answered the phone - what language did he jabber in? Could it have been Arabic what with you being in an Arabic speaking country. It's generally what happens before the person then takes a cue from the caller and speaks to them in English for e.g.

I know it's annoying for your luggage to not be waiting for you but the reality is that Oman is tiny and you we're never going to wait long for your luggage even on a day when there are a lot of flights arriving. Our current arrivals hall is no bigger than a school gym and the lost luggage office sits in the corner of it with a couple of dozen items waiting for collection. It is not on the same scale as Dubai or Heathrow. And for sure if you had waited for your case to be delivered it would have been.

Anyway I hope you have a wonderful holiday in this most beautiful of countries. It's a really exciting time to be here. We're celebrating National Day and there's lots going on - Did you see the Red Arrows yesterday?

Oh and another reason we're all happy and excited, apart from the fact we have a national day holiday this weekend, is that we have the first of our much needed seasonal rains forecasted over the next few days. 😍

Sounds fake but ok.....Wink

MauiWest · 21/11/2016 09:43

Hmm

really? You think that relaying on one clean pair of underwear only is a great start for a holiday or a business trip? People tend to pack things they NEED in their luggage, don't you? No one said you can't survive without your luggage, but that's hardly the point.

ohdearme1958 · 21/11/2016 11:29

Maui, my point was that at the very least you'd think someone would pack a pair of pants and change of clothes in their hand luggage just in case - and not being able to do so wasn't due to any restrictions you referred to.

Do I pack everything in my luggage. No. I don't. Nor does anyone I know. My hand luggage is kept for things I'll need when I get to my destination just in case my suitcase does get lost. So if I was traveling for business I'd have a suit in a suit bag and it would go in the cabin with me. Shoes etc would be in my hand luggage. Not that I would be traveling for business but my husband did and that's how it was done. I did go to a wedding abroad recently with my daughters and we had our dresses in suit bags and shoes etc in our hand luggage. When packing I always ask myself - what do I need when I get there? What if my suitcase gets lost? So along with the comfy clothes I change into on the plane there would be enough clothes to see me through a few days. Unless someone's mugged of their hand luggage there really is no reason to have nothing to change into in an emergency. And if your suitcase had gone missing it's not a disaster - just an annoyance.

And medication? Always in your handbag. Or split between two pieces of luggage.

MauiWest · 21/11/2016 12:03

good grief how big are your hand luggage?!

My point is that if I could get away with hand luggage only, I would. If I also travel with check-in luggage, its because I need them. Lost luggage give me the rage too.

ohdearme1958 · 21/11/2016 12:23

Same size as everyone else's Maui. Those little suitcases you buy that are labelled suitable as hand luggage.

There's a knack to packing and I think it helps if you pack a capsule wardrobe of neutrals and leave the kitchen sink at home.

MauiWest · 21/11/2016 13:07

Oh, so you are one of those people who try to take all the space in the overhead lockers with their oversize bags! (and complain when the rest of us use them as well and their bag end up at the over side of the plane).

a knack to packing? I don't take any kitchen sink, but my children behave absolutely amazingly well when we travel because I take enough supplies and entertainment for the trip. If I travel on business, rarely these days, my reasonably sized hand luggage are full too. Still need the things in my suitcase though.

ohdearme1958 · 21/11/2016 13:29

I think you must have missed this Same size as everyone else's Maui. Those little suitcases you buy that are labelled suitable as hand luggage

But anyway - its one small handbag and one carry on bag thats of the authorised size. So something like a Samsonite cosmopolite spinner. And sometimes not even a carry on. Depends where Im going at the other end. So for instance when I came home on Saturday it was handbag only, and when I make the trip to the Uk its handbag only again. And a suit bag is no different from a coat being handed in to be hung up.

Its a long time since I travelled with my children but I did do a non stop to NZ once with 3 children under 4. Hand luggage wasnt a problem. Nor were they. And when I do travel with my grandchildren which is often, again hand luggage isn't a problem. I think its just about prioritising what you think is important and what isn't. Save your hand luggage for your duty free or use your hand luggage for things you might need on the flight, and/or, if your suitcase is lost? I know which one I prefer.

That rain I mentioned much earlier might just be about to make an appearance. Im going to go our for a drive now. Its been nice talking to you.

Oblomov16 · 21/11/2016 13:30

Goodness, I've never packed my knickers and the stuff I need for the first few days in my hand luggage.
Seriously, this is what you supposed to do? Who Knew!! Hmm

Artandco · 21/11/2016 13:45

Ob - that's what handluggage is for! Essentials. Even if I take just 6am flight out and plan to be back on the 7pm evening flight, I still take basics incase flight is cancelled or delayed or whatever. If I take just a large laptop type day bag with work stuff in,I can still add some pants/ socks/ top. Small clear toiletry bag with mini toothbrush/ paste and deodorant. Phone charger. With that I'm covered for all basics

MauiWest · 21/11/2016 13:55

I do pack for essentials too, but that means
my laptop, baby nappies and baby paraphernalia, baby food, 2 baby blankets, 1 teddy per child, 2 change of clothes per child ,toys, snacks to keep the kids entertain during the flight and possible delays - my kids behave amazingly when we travel, but that demands planning distraction - my food, as airline rarely cater for my food allergies (or give it to someone else). Not much space for anything else.

When I travel for business, rarely nowadays, once I pack my laptop, chargers, documents to work on the plane with, toothbrush spare underwear and a bikini, there's no space for a spare suit and shoes!

Having a change of clothes helps, but doesn' t make lost luggage any less unpleasant.
