Drugs and breastfeeding (prescription drugs!)

I had to go to A&E on Monday night with suspected gallbladder issues and they prescribed me cocodamol and buscopan. I took 4 cocodamol and 4 buscopan on Mon night; 4 of each on Tue; 2 of each on Wed; 2 of each on Thu and that's it.

DD is 14 months so I've just been giving her breastmilk at night, but haven't done so since before hospital on Monday because of the drugs. I don't think I am going to need to take any more painkillers now unless it flares up again (I do have a dr's appointment to deal with whatever it is). Assuming there's still a bit of milk left in there, how long should I leave it before feeding DD? Or should I just accept that it's time to give up?

I was planning to give up shortly soon anyway, it's just that I like it - it's the only time she is happy to be still on me and have a cuddle these days! I never thought I'd say that, I hated it at first, but now I would be a bit sad to think I'd done it for the last time.

I just conducted a trial search and couldn't find cocodamol but maybe you could try with the active ingredient instead; it does give info on buscopan, tap on the active ingredient's name access more data.

I get the sadness about stopping. We also a tough start but now that my DD is over two I know that we should stop but she loves it and so do I.

Both fine, I bf on them and drs allways ok'd it. There's a specialist pharmasist at breaSt support network you can check with.

I breastfed whilst on 240mg of codeine a day from birth which was prescribed straight after birth so they were well aware, I never noticed any side effects on my prem 3lb baby and continued on it till he was 6 months, I never even questioned it...... Thing is now I look back and think, what the hell!!!! It just doesn't seem right I was allowed to do that, its a very strong drug, but maybe only small amounts transfer over to breastmilk??

The tiniest amounts transfer over, there are very few drugs that you can't breast feed on, if you check with the breastfeeding support network pharmasist for research.

Bubbles the guidance for codeine and breastfeeding has only changed within the last couple of years, so if your DC is older than about 2, it wouldn't have been unusual.

DD is almost 4 and BF until 3.They gave us co-codamol and oramorph in hospital post c-section, stating it was fine. I understand the guidance has changed recently though.

Nottingham hospital have a drugs in breastmilk dept within their pharmacy.

The Breastfeeding Network have a drugs while breastfeeding Facebook page. Lots of info on there - it's supported by a pharmacist with a special interest in the area so this resource through the BfN is the best there is.

Yes like other posters have mentioned, you need the breastfeeding network drugs in breast milk Web page. There is a specialist pharmacist Wendy Jones who you can email if you can't find enough info on the online factsheets.
