What's with all the wanky plate turning on Masterchef?

A plate of lovely food gets placed reverently in front of Marcus, Monica and Greg, and then the chef feels the need to deftly rotate it by approximately 120 degrees.

Might try that with our takeaway Chinese tonight.

I'm surprised the perspex box hasn't made it on to We Want Plates yet.

Link for the uninitiated: wewantplates.com

sweet and sour sauce... no, it's sweet and sour jus

AnnPerkins · 18/11/2016 10:37

Interestingly (perhaps not very interestingly) I've just realised I do subconsciously place plates the right 'way round' when we bother to eat at the table.

Even more interestingly, your idea of the right way round, eg protein at 8 o'clock, is the same as mine, Mardy.

Perhaps it's an evolutionary thing.

FranklyMeDeer · 18/11/2016 10:38

Yy to the plate turning, and also,

Chef 1. Piles up his food as per Mardy's Chinese takeaway above and dots sauce around it artfully using a manky plastic dropper bottle. JT and GW enthuse about the presentation.

Chef 2. Piles up his food as per Mardy's Chinese takeaway above and dots sauce around it artfully using a manky plastic dropper bottle. JT and GW do eye rolling and have a chat about being more refined.

THEY LOOK EXACTLY THE FUCKING SAME Confused

I love everything about Professional MasterChef, so YABtotesU. I'll let you off though, as you've added another handy rule to my MasterChef drinking game:

'Plate of food' - DRINK
Gregg calls someone 'mate' - DRINK
Close up of Gregg shoving a massive spoonful of pudding in his mouth - DRINK
Marcus or Monica raise a sceptical eyebrow during a skills test - DRINK
Gregg calls himself a 'punter' - DRINK
'I'm making X ... 3 ways' - DRINK
Female chef who isn't Monica Galetti - DOWN IN ONE

And now

Plate swivel - DRINK

I have 3 episodes to catch up on later.

Tagetes · 18/11/2016 10:53

Gregg shouting FIRE! - DRINK (and deploy extinguisher)

ScrambledSmegs · 18/11/2016 11:04

Maybe a smear of sweet and sour sauce on the plate.

Oh gods, the smears! Especially the chocolate sauce ones. Why can they not see that they look like skidmarks?

Mynestisfullofempty · 18/11/2016 11:12

Monica says "plate of food" far too many times and mispronounces a lot of words*, which surprises me, given her experience in high-end restaurants.

*I can't remember which words I noticed last night but probably will as soon as I post this.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/11/2016 11:19

I must try this Masterchief drinking game, I think I'll do a down in one when they struggle through what seems to be two heavy sets of metal doors when the serve their dishes to the critics.

MardyBra · 18/11/2016 11:27

I'd never noticed "plate of food".

Can I add in John Torode's "lovely lovely thing" for the non-Professional drinking game?

Thanks for the link Mardy

I now have a weird craving for a couple of lonely raspberries placed precariously on a random house brick Grin

CurlsRUs · 18/11/2016 11:33

Re Monica's pronunciation - last night she was on particularly top form!

A few that I spotted:
Butter = botter
Mussels = mossels
Tartare sauce = tartair sauce
Bland = blund

And why is every plate being garnished with nasturtium leaves this year?

MardyBra · 18/11/2016 11:53

To be fair, Monica is a Kiwi isn't she, so some words will be her natural accent. But there are some French words she pronounces really oddly. Can remember the name now, but the way she pronounced that orangey hollandaise thingy was very odd.

OP posts:
MardyBra · 18/11/2016 11:56

Remembered it! Maltaise.

Which autocorrect wants to put as Malaise.

I prefer Australian version.

Down to the final 4

schmack · 18/11/2016 12:08

Why is the foam and pomme puree back? (is that mashed potatoes?) - so 2015

PaulDacresConscience · 18/11/2016 12:42

Monica is known as 'Gurning Monica' here, because of the facial expressions she pulls during the skills tests.

I can't articulate how much I dislike dear old Gregg and the way that he stands in judgement. He's a fucking greengrocer!

MardyBra · 18/11/2016 17:42

Oh yes. Greg with his drawn out "I"s, followed by a little pause, and then a self-important announcement of his views.

OP posts:
ShimmeringIce · 18/11/2016 17:45

Monica said "butty" in a very strange way, as though she was trying a northern accent maybe?

MardyBra · 25/11/2016 01:00

They're still at it this week.

TrickyD · 25/11/2016 07:51

FunnyCousin, please could you add

"It eats well"

To your list?

The food eats nothing, it just sits there on the plate.

QueenArseClangers · 25/11/2016 08:16

Ha ha!
DH and I were very pleased that Nanny Plum got through last night Grin

The third plate mystery always gets us, surely a 70s hostess trolley would be more convenient.
I absolutely hate it when the chef says 'enjoy' to the critics. Like it's a fucking order.

Two year old DD was awake poorly the other night so was downstairs with us whilst MC was on. She groggily raised a finger at the telly from her nest on the sofa and whispered 'Humpty Dumpty' at the sight of Gregg Wallace's gurning visog!

QueenArseClangers · 25/11/2016 08:23

Nanny Plum last night. So pleased she's managed to get time of from the relentless slog at the castle to pursue her culinary dream.

moreslackthanslick · 25/11/2016 08:24

Was gutted the older guy who created that insanely divine looking "deconstructed" Black Forest gateau on Wednesday night served up an embarrassing mess of a steak and kidney pie last night! 😢😢 Off you go sonny!

I've had a drinking game for ages too... My Faves are...

Jus
Foam
3 ways
(I did note last night someone had the audacity to do a steak and kidney pie a mere 2 ways!!)

Where's the food critic who looks like Family Guy this series? He's the best one!!

QueenArseClangers · 25/11/2016 08:54

Ha ha! Yes, the Peter Griffin critic.
