FFS just seen a text instructing my dc to 'be spotty and bake a cake' on Friday

It came earlier today, not that it would have helped had I seen it earlier. So that's 2.5 days notice to come up with a costume. They have nothing spotty (stripes we have aplenty but no spots). I work f/t and we don't get in until 6 both nights and ds has cubs on one of the nights too. I also have work to do once they are in bed.

Why do schools fucking do this? It's hard enough, especially when you work and are a lp. Happy to support charities, but no time to conjure up spots and cakes midweek.

We've told our children spots OR stripes, this time, so most people will have something, even if it's just spotty or stripy socks.

do you work in my kid's school? He's a little boy in year 2 with long hair and a Welsh name, in the midlands. (don't tell me who you are unless you want to, I'm just curious if you are from the same school)

Ah no! Not the Midlands, but I am in year 2,in a class with a boy with a welsh name...!!!

Gosh, this does sound irritating.

It won't help you today but if this is a regular occurrence (having to provide a costume / money / cakes) at short notice, keep a record of every time it happens and the notice given. At the end of the term, write a polite letter to the head, with your summary, and ask that you have at least two weekends' notice.

If you have missed something in one of the weekly newsletters, this won't help you.

One thing that might be handy is to set up a WhatsApp group for the parents in your year. Then when something like this comes round, whoever has combed through the bumf can ping a message about the stuff that you need to do something for that is coming up.

As a parent and teacher I see this from both sides. Kids would be pretty fed up if there were no fun days, mufti days etc when they know other schools are doing it. They like having a theme. It's not like the teachers do these things for their own amusement. And, as a pp said, most teachers hate mufti day. They probably thought 'spotty' was a nice easy one- much better than 'all dress up as pirates' or something.

well if he's got long curly blonde hair, has a baby sister and a little brother in nursery (both also with Welsh names) and got Star of the Week last week for his homework (a scarf) then it's a huge coincidence.

But as I said, I don't want to know who you are unless you want me to. I don't care if I'm identified but won't post that info because I doubt you want to be!
