To be just weary of all the aggression on the roads??

Last week I was called a "wanker," a "cunt" and a "stupid fucking bitch". Just bad temper, no accidents or anything remotely close to one.

I drive a small nippy car, I'm genuinely courteous and very watchful. I try to let people out/in and always say thank you. I mean, what is it? I'm so, so tired of the unfettered aggression. Is it me or is it getting worse out there? Confused There was a guy last week who was clearly lost/in the wrong lane, so I just slowed down to let him in and the guy in a van behind me started honking and then accelerated to overtake us both while screaming out of the window! It was in a village, by a school.

What would it be like if pedestrians were like that? We'd all be kicking shit out of each other every five minutes! I mean, I'm no Driving Miss Daisy but jeez people, why all the unbridled fury!? Or maybe I'm just hormonal this evening and taking it all too seriously....Grin

There seem to be a lot of aggressive drivers about - I regard tailgating, cutting you up etc as aggressive unless it's a genuine error (which happens occasionally of course). Just because they aren't banging on your window doesn't mean they aren't being dangerous or aggressive.

I have two cars - I don't drive any differently but in my Land Rover (which I keep for use only when really needed) I am cut up far far less. Anecdotally most of the tailgaters I get are young women.

We're too densely packed in like rats in places on the roads and it brings out the worst in people.

I love driving in rural Ireland, Scotland, France and the US where it's quiet.

I honestly think there are way more people driving with no licence than anyone imagines. There is no-cross referencing for Insurance, MOT etc so it's really easy for anyone to buy, tax and insure and car and drive it with no licence - the car won't trip ANPR as it's "legal" but the driver isn't.

I'd agree with you that tail-gating etc is aggressive, wasonthelist. I was under the impression that people were specifically talking about banging on the window, shouting abuse etc. But, yes, tailgating is a pet hate of mine.

Haven't rtft . This page is bad enough.
Is there a website you can upload photos, videos too

wasonthelist · 17/11/2016 13:12

Plenty on youtube Dowser.

Dowser · 17/11/2016 13:15

On the 50 speed restriction zone on m1, I've been doing 48-50 maybe 51 in the second lane taking care passing lorries and I've still had idiots undertaking me.
Why should I have to get in behind big lorries in a low speed restored area. Believe me I'm not crawling along at 30
If I'm genuinely doing something wrong please tell me

crazycatzz · 17/11/2016 15:09

Some people are just twats when they get behind the wheel. The power must go to their head or something.
On Facebook a woman was bragging about her fast car and that the reason she sits on people's car boots as we are not driving fast enough for her. Obviously the speed limit doesn't apply to her because I've seen her out and about and she's awful and will cause an accident one of these days.

wasonthelist · 17/11/2016 16:35

Dowser - you are not the Police - the speed other people are doing is their issue. Pretty much any time you have so much space to your left on a motorway that people can undertake it means you should really have moved over - keep as far to the left as you can unless overtaking. This would be the same if you were doing 70 on the normal section in the middle lane with lane 1 empty to your left

wasonthelist · 17/11/2016 16:37

Btw all the responses on here about how things give people the rage and boil their piss kind off illustrates the OPs point

wasonthelist · 17/11/2016 16:37

Bah! Kind of

Eolian · 17/11/2016 16:41

Wow - I must live in a weird place. I hardly ever see this kind of thing. At roundabouts people seem to all stop and politely wait if it's unclear who should go. Have never had road rage directed at me where I live now or previously. Admittedly I didn't drive when I lived in London...

GeminiRising · 17/11/2016 16:47

minifingerz

An LED display which could display lighted messages in your back window. Series of buttons by the steering wheel so you could choose the appropriate polite message for the situation

I've been thinking about that idea for years!!!!

I'll be your first customer! Grin

YANBU I'm fed up with people hooting and shouting and overtaking when I am sat waiting for a yellow box to clear because of a queue the other side of it. So they swerve past at great speed, cut in and block the box, which then stops traffic crossing the other way and blocks a busy intersection up and half the town. Happens at least 3 or 4 times a week, and it's the shouting and swearing when they are the ones in the wrong that's really annoying.

Binkybix · 17/11/2016 17:57

When walking with my pram, I got called a cunt when I had the cheek to ask a driver to stop when he moved forward at my green man in standing traffic. A man next to me responded in kind to him and it all got very heated. I think some people simply HATE admitting when they are wrong.

Eevee77 · 17/11/2016 18:02

Engineers, he hadn't crossed the carriageway yet. He was sat at the giveaway lane waiting to cross. I was the one sat in between the carriageways. I'd passed my test about 3 weeks earlier. Like I said, my mistake but the only inconvenience to him was losing 10 seconds.

Some of the stories on here are horrendous.

Waitingfordolly · 17/11/2016 18:19

I get bullied much more driving a smaller car than my old one too, even though I drive at the same speed and am fairly fast. I have no problem slowing down for tailgaters though. I might get cameras, good idea.

Olympiathequeen · 17/11/2016 18:45

When you say 'nippy' car, is it a sports car or a VW polo?

Draws no end of aggro.

What worries me more are really old people driving. One pulled out on me on a roundabout and was oblivious. Today an old giffer who'd parked in 2 bays, wandered out and pulled onto the service road over the pedestrian crossing! ....(normal exit was closed for roadworks and entrance should have been used instead). Ffs we should be retesting at 70

SleepingBooty · 17/11/2016 18:53

I had a teeny car and was continuously being cut up on the roads. Since I've got a large old man's car I've had no knobhead incidents which is odd.

eyespydreams · 17/11/2016 19:14

For the people saying they don't recognise this - it genuinely varies from one place to another - i spend a lot of time driving in a nice quiet rural place where fair enough there are boy racers and lots of 4x4s but no aggro at all ever.

However I mostly drive in London and agree it is crazy aggressive. I can always tell on the m1 or m40 into london when the line is crossed into 'London driving' i.e. much more aggressive, beepy and likely to get abuse. Also agree there are likely a lot of uninsured/unlicensed drivers so I'm always nervous about a bump even if would be their fault.

Had a guy try and give me a bollocking the other week because I changed lanes and he was apparently trying to overtake me (?!?!? It was NOT an overtaking situation, a side street leading on to Marylebone road), i merrily bollocked him back but he was such a tragic little misogynist, and actually I felt really scared afterwards that I'd engaged with someone who could have got out and done god knows what. I really don't enjoy driving in London any more at all.

My only surprise on this thread is the pp who commutes every day to London and has no problems! Amazing!
