To think gallstones hurt more than labour?!?

9 hour session of what I suspected was biliary colic overnight confirmed by ultrasound this morning as gallstones. Thought I was dying.

Honestly I'd rather do labour more than once than be like that again, and I know that it will happen again soon...

Or is that just me?

I didn't have gallstones but I had a gallbladder full of sludge. It was the worst few months of my life, in the end I hadn't ate anything for 10 days and was living off pain killers and lucozade. The weird thing for me was that after weeks of a constant dull ache and not eating (I dropped 2st) I woke up one morning feeling fine and I started eating again and could eat the things I couldn't before. That was 3 years ago and I've gained the weight back, I'd like to lose a stone or two but I don't want to risk my gallbladder playing up again.

mygiddyuncle-there's a thread full of women here saying gallstones is worse than labour and you're still not having it. Also you've never had it before I don't really see why you're passing comment on how painful you think it is; It's agony!

Pyjamaface · 15/11/2016 17:26

I was apparently 'lucky' when I had gallstones.

'Lucky' because I didn't have the agonising pain, instead I would puke and retch for hours and hours until everything my body could get rid of was out and then I would pass out in exhaustion. I never knew there were so many colours inside my body.

They removed my gallbladder after 3 visits to A&E in a week, had to spend a week in hospital on a drip first and then reacted to the GA and spent the next night and day puking again.

EMCS so can't compare to labour, and of course I was 'lucky' but I would rather give labour a go than go through that again

Can somebody describe what happened to them.

I posted last night on chat. Something was wrong with me and someone suggested it could be gall stones.

I have had the same symptoms once before and went to walk in. Dr said nothing was wrong.

Pain was in back. Felt winded. Like i couldnt breathe properly. Couldnt get comfortable standing or sitting or curled up or propped up. I didnt want baby to wake up because i couldnt have jad her anywhere nr me. Started at 10pm finally got to sleep about 1.30. With pain subsiding about 1am.

Took paracetamol and brufen dont know of it was coincidence that pain and discomfort died down after that

BishopBrennansArse · 15/11/2016 17:43

Pain immediately under my ribs, a little to the right, radiating through to my back.

Constant, unremitting agony. Could barely move or speak. Felt nauseous.

Had a few bouts lasting a few minutes that I put down to indigestion but then when the bouts got more frequent and lasted longer (Monday's bout lasted 9 hours) I remembered our family predisposition to them and asked for an ultrasound which happened on Monday and confirmed the diagnosis.

All they need to diagnose or rule out is a simple Ultrasound scan.

This is an interesting read, really glad I've found it. Anybody have pain on their right shoulder blade? I asked dr google and it threw up gallstones have also been wakening in the night with severe cramps.

Janey50 · 15/11/2016 17:57

firsttimemum15 - what you have described sounds very like what my daughter had when she had gallstones and a gall bladder infection 4 years ago. She has a pretty high pain threshold, but she was practically screaming in pain. Said it was the worst pain she has ever had,and she has had a baby, and kidney stones 3 times!

yumscrumfatbum · 15/11/2016 18:12

I was treated for a UTI then given pain relief for what GP thought was a pulled muscle. In fact I had gallstones. I found it difficult to explain where the pain was. I felt like it was in my shoulder blade but also it felt like it was in the centre of my side. I found breathing uncomfortable. I too told my GP there was a family history and he agreed that I should have an ultrasound. I felt feverish and nauseous too turned out my gallbladder was enlarged and inflamed. I had to have an MRI too to rule out stones in the ducts

firsttimemum15 · 15/11/2016 20:59

Janey50 that's interesting. Gallstones sounds scary and serious though

How would I approach it with go if walk in go said nothing was wrong.

What were your daughters symptoms Janey

I'm not old I'm young quite healthy etc etc etc

PoochiePoo · 15/11/2016 21:06

Totally agree. I was rushed for emergency surgery with gallstones - the pain was something else. It had me in tears. I'd been suffering for a while but hadn't known what it was. Labour was a walk in the park compared to it (although that did smart a bit too!).

Andbabymakesthree · 15/11/2016 21:10

I was rushed to hospital 8 wks post partem. Turned out to be gallstones. It was much worse than labour!!

Look up apple cider vinegar OP til you can get it sorted .

Andbabymakesthree · 15/11/2016 21:11

Gallbladder extremely infected and removed just under 4 mths from attack. Worst consultant had ever seen.

littlebrownbag · 15/11/2016 22:20

I have a gallstone, but fortunately I haven't had an acute attack yet - my consultant diagnosed me when my mild hiatus hernia symptoms got worse (heartburn and random loud burping and occasional gastric dumping), he had a hunch and sent me for a scan. Apparently hiatus hernias and gallstones can turn up together in patients, no-one knows why.

He told me to avoid cucumbers, courgettes and green peppers, as well as the usual "watch your fat intake". Apparently the skin pigment of these veg contain a chemical which triggers the gall bladder to contract and make any symptoms worse. Not seen that advice anywhere else, but I must admit cucumbers do make my burps worse so tend to avoid them anyway...
