DD is 15. She started her periods at 11. She uses towels atm, but she doesn't like them. She has tried tampons quite a few times, but she says they're too hard and they hurt, and I had to remind her to change them. She's been looking around and has requested a mooncup (the lunette/meluna one I think). I've told her that 1) they're a bit fiddly and take some getting used to and 2) as a virgin it will be even harder for her to get used to it. She is very confident with herself, isn't squeamish about touching herself etc, and really wants to try one. AIBU to get her one? Anyone else's teens use one? TIA

I was a virgin (whatever that means these days!) for the first 10 years or so I used a cup. But modern medical thinking is that the hymen shouldn't tear the first time having sex for most women anyway, so don't over think it.

Some of the other brands can be a lot softer than actual mooncups so would recommend googling "menstrual cup comparison chart" or something to have a look at the different ones.

Seconded. I found the mooncup horrible - taking it out that hard edge was really painful, but got a lily cup and am delighted with it.

My teen uses one ( mooncup) and after an initial few drama filled days and lots of time in bathroom googling/u tubing she got the hang of it and much prefers it to tampons/pads...did take those few days for her to get it right and a few hissy fits on her part but she loves it now...

DD uses Diva Cup size 1, I use size 2.
Highly recommend x

I'd recommend a YouTube channel by Precious Stars Pads for her. She's a teenage girl who reviews different menstrual cups and has some great advice, even for those who aren't teenagers!

I am in perimenopause but still bleeding and I got a DivaCup (wish I had tried it sooner) and as soon as my 13 year old daughter wants one, I will buy her one.

Right now she uses cloth pads, and lined "period underwear" from Thinx and Dear Kate.

if she's been using tampons her hymen isn't intact. Try a small Mooncup / similar but cut the flipping annoying stalk thing off - nobody needs that digging into them.

AIBU to feel totally nauseous every time mooncups are mentioned. Need to wash my brain after Grin

I used a moon up from about 16, saw it advertised on back if toilet door and I converted my mum too! I was a virgin, heavy flow, used to tampons for years as would flood through pads and hated them. I also use cloth pads/pantiliners with a menstrual cup as I have heavy flow. They're pretty, sooo much more comfortable, no period smell (bleurgh) and make a perfect combination. Would definitely recommend, do bear in mind the removal can be traumatic if you don't break the suction seal Shock and staying calm is very important! Not a problem I've had but know others it put off.
