To ask for help taking the piss out of MLM?

thevulvabrigade · 12/11/2016 10:34

A woman from school on my friends list joined Forever Living a few months ago and I knew it was only a matter of time until the round robin PM came inviting everyone to join her. Now it has. I've been invited to some "online Christmas Event" and I'm debating whether to join in and take the piss out of them all. Any ideas? Should I share Timeless Vie memes? Anything else I can do?

OP posts:
TaliDiNozzo · 12/11/2016 19:33

WannaBe - sorry to ask but what is VI? I'm taking your post to mean that a medical related group are being targeted by Juice Plus? That is appalling if that is what you mean.

MyCatsHateMLMtoo · 12/11/2016 20:02

Like you, OP, I was recently added to a fb group by a close relative and had a quick look at the page. It was full of posts for cures for all sorts of illnesses and diseases so I sent a terse response questioning the legality of posting these dubious claims.

I was blocked immediately.

I expect you will too, OP, if you post a negative response.

OurBlanche · 12/11/2016 20:07

Oh! I asked one how her potion was going to replace the missing Intrinsic Factor in my gut ... and whether she carried any indemnity that would compensate DH when her potion led directly to my early demise.

She actually suggested that her potion thing would replace B12 injections for pernicious anaemia!

I hit every report button I could find. I would have reported the potion but it was so secret, so valuable I wasn't going to see the actual product until I had paid!

All sorts of logic fail there... but I made a huge fuss on the local fb page!

SusanneLinder · 12/11/2016 20:13

I hate Forever Living. Or Younique. Partylite I like. Same price as Yankee and they don't make me feel sick. But I won't host a party.

BertrandRussell · 12/11/2016 20:16

Best to ignore.

I have a friend who's a Juice+ person. She gave Trick or Treating children Juice + sweets and vouchers........I was Shock

lauryloo · 12/11/2016 21:23

I've a friend trying to get me to sell make up. I don't have time for a thousand pouting selfies a day

CotswoldStrife · 12/11/2016 22:12

The sheer number of make-up MLMs is staggering. Just among my FB friends I have at least four or five different brands. I've got two different friends selling different stuff posting makeup selfies Hmm Not enough hours in the day to attend all the parties or pounds in my purse to buy it all I'll make an exception for Avon though Grin

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 12/11/2016 23:37

You can work on esa...

crashdoll · 13/11/2016 01:05

I agree with WannaBe. As someone with health problems and a visible disability, I get targeted for a lot of shite. I once got accosted at the school gate. They swore that their aloe Vera product could cure my progressive disease. Fortunately, I am well educated on my condition and mostly, quite accepting of things as they are. However, when I was first very ill and shortly after I was diagnosed, I was very low and vulnerable. I am ashamed to admit that I spent £1000k on alternative woo woo therapies. I was desperate and these twats pray on that.

Mummyme1987 · 13/11/2016 01:18

I've had the actiderm rep tell me that their flexecreme would cure me. When pushed she sent me the ingredients list. It's very expensive Vicks! How's that going to cure anything? It's brainwashing cult behaviour.

Neaders · 13/11/2016 01:36

Don't be a dick.. she is trying to make some extra money for a reason... she prob needs it! If you don't want to join in then just don't. Simply ignore it. It would be pretty mean of you to ridicule her online party. Catch a grip.

coldcanary · 13/11/2016 01:40

Point them in the direction of a repeat of Last week tonight with John Oliver. He did a big thing on mlm a few days ago on Sky. It's an American show but looks at a few well known mlm schemes over here and how they target people, plus what happens to anyone who doesn't keep up with the selling techniques. Scary stuff.

BlueFolly · 13/11/2016 01:57

You've come on here looking for help with being mean to someone? Fuck off. We prefer being mean behind people's backs here on mumsnet.

Can't watch it in this country

KatharinaRosalie · 13/11/2016 08:42

It's John Oliver, Multi-Level Marketing , the same I posted before. It's really good

AlchemySchmidtsSmile · 13/11/2016 20:25

Sorry Kat, did not rtft. Love John Oliver though and the fact they did a subtitled Spanish one with guy from Jane the virgin at the end. Why is it unavailable in the uk?

AlchemySchmidtsSmile · 13/11/2016 20:26

^ Ah. Sky.

KatharinaRosalie · 13/11/2016 21:33

No worries, just that people were also saying that my link didn't work.

He did a really good overview of all those companies - basically something like 98% of people earn absolutely nothing. And with all the 'oh but you just need a few friends to join' - after 14 rounds, you will literally run out of people living on this planet.

So yes, it's a great way for people to get rich - the ones who started the particular MLM scheme.

BSintolerant · 13/11/2016 23:10

The best advice John Oliver gives is:

Give your family the lifestyle they deserve, which is frankly not getting caught up in this bullshit!

crazywriter · 14/11/2016 04:18

I feel sad that people have to find a way to take the pissed out of someone deciding to try make money. Yes it's a pyramid scheme and yes people seeking FL are bloody annoying (I have a few friends doing it) but that doesn't mean they need to be ridiculed. It's so easy to just ignore. YWBVU and bitchy to do otherwise.

debbs77 · 14/11/2016 09:17

I have done some. On one, I made over £3000 in profit, and I earnt myself a cruise. No it isn't for everyone, and yes, people often try them and leave (I know I have, for different reasons). But even if they work in getting a stay at home mum back in to the world of work, or increase someone's self esteem, then that's all positive.

I know one lady that joined Younique. The makeup, the selling, the people she met, all made her feel empowered and in control and as a result felt mentally ready to lose weight. She has and she looks amazing!

BertrandRussell · 14/11/2016 10:15

I hate the fact that people rare drawn into them expecting to make money and most people don't. It's the companies I have a problem with, not the people. Unless they peddle dangerous health claims, like the Juice+ fans who regularly tell me that it will cure anything from cancer to ingrown toenails.

Anna275 · 14/11/2016 14:52

Has Lularoe made it over here yet? I have several friends from high school back in the US who have started selling it and it makes me very nervous. These are people who don't have much money, hence why they are trying to start a side business, but it requires investing as much as $5000 upfront to buy the inventory.

I got married a few months and had one friend that didn't even respond to the invitations for my wedding or hen do. But when she saw my wedding photos she sent both me and my sister messages saying we looked great, sorry she couldn't make it, but would we like to buy some of her product? I was actually excited to hear from her but once it turned into a sales pitch I couldn't be bothered to reply.

KatharinaRosalie · 14/11/2016 15:35

J. Oliver was also showing people with garages full of the products that they have just bought themselves, to keep the rank or level or whatever. So many people actually losing money they could not afford to lose.
