To think £100 a month should be enough for clothes?

I don't have to wear formal suits for work, so I'm always in smart casual, with emphasis on the casual. But £100 doesn't seem to go that far. What do you spend (inc shoes)?

I probably could easily spend £100 a month on clothes. But it depends on the month I suppose.

I haven't bought myself anything for 6 weeks. I do want to buy a dress for Christmas party so will probably spend min of £50.

But it depends. I've cut my spending right back. I used to buy something every week, and do serious shopping on payday. But now I have to save for a house I've decluttered and am being more careful.

I don't tend to buy fashion pieces for the sake of it. I'm trying to buy what I need. But sometimes...I buy something because I want it.

Jenny

DOn't worry - takes a lot to offend me. Grin

I do have stuff that I need - e.g. swimsuit, pair of shorts, couple of tee-shirts. I also have some stuff that I bought but never wear (got fatter !) but can't bring myself to get rid of because it's so beautiful, but no - I haven't got an extensive wardrobe. I tend to layer things in the cold weather e.g. vest (yes, I know . . .), tee-shirt, thin jumper, cardie) I don't wear a coat unless the weather is freezing (my choice - don't like coats), so my coats has lasted in good condition for a long time, so half a dozen tees and jumpers, some jeans and leggings and a couple of pairs of smart trousers plus three frocks (which I've had more years than I care to remember) just about does me. I do have too many shoes, though, because I have small and strangely shaped feet with a very high instep, so if I find shoes that fit and are comfortable, I buy them. When I worked I had three suits and a couple of very nice blouses that were work only to keep them smart. (Had them for years, too)

I have to admit that I'm assuming you are accumulating stuff and not getting rid as you buy new. I am envisaging your wardrobe being one of these Hollywood-style walk in closets, with hundreds of exquisite garments colour-coded and sorted by season, and all in the dry cleaners bags.

KatharinaRosalie · 13/11/2016 13:22

I regularly sort out my wardrobe and get rid of things that I no longer like. Charity shops have to get their stuff from somewhere.

Millymollymanatee · 13/11/2016 17:19

£100 sounds like a huge amount to me. I spend about £50 every six months.

MissVictoria · 13/11/2016 17:21

Work clothes i'd say go for quality. 2 or 3 complete outfits. Same shoes. Should last the full year, and be £200 max.

fussychica · 13/11/2016 17:25

Never thought about but know it's nothing like that. I love a bargain so buy reduced and charity shop stuff as well as jeans and shoes etc from more expensive places. I can't stand paying for a "label". I no longer work but even when I did I never spent that much.

mummafresh · 13/11/2016 17:32

My biggest expense is Jeans... I buy 2 pairs at a time and they always go in the thigh.....

kazzieb10 · 13/11/2016 17:36

Am still wearing coat I bought in 2006! North face down though and still fine. I remember some girlfriends doing a survey- One spent £2K year on clothes (working, no children), another £5K (husband earns £250,000), me the poor relation(!) probably less than £400 a year on me. Spend more on children though -teenagers -my son gets through a pair of skateboarding shoes every 8 weeks @ £70 a go😢

kitdomgen · 13/11/2016 17:42

I live on benefit, any clothing money is spent on my son, I doubt I have spent 100 in last year. But I am a sponger of state so prob ok if I I go without. My son disabled but still like nice clothes

SpunkyMummy · 13/11/2016 17:45

That depends. 1200$ a year is enough for business casual attire.

I wear business casual on most days but (unfortunately) not always. And 1200$ a year isn't enough for professional business attire (and gowns).

And most of my shirts and blazers have to be taken in it at the waist, which means additional tailoring costs...

GerdaLovesLili · 13/11/2016 17:49

I splurged this month and spent £9.00 on a sweater dress from Aldi,
£4.00 on some mineral face powder.
And £10.00 on a new pair of boots.

Last month I bought a silk tunic shirt for £7.00 because I neede a new interview outfit. Oooh! and two new pairs of thick leggings also £7.00.

MumboNumber5 · 13/11/2016 17:56

just worked mine out and it was £90 a month this year (if I don't buy anything else now).

Doublechocolatecake · 13/11/2016 18:04

The most honest comment here.. £100 a month is too small to spend on clothes especially living in the uk which is such a cold country causing you to be spend multiple amounts on hats, scarves, shoes, boots, trainers, coats, jumpers, skirts, dressses...... and so on

Maireadplastic · 13/11/2016 18:08

I absolutely love clothes.£100 a month is completely doable.

Millymollymanatee · 13/11/2016 18:10

Doublechocolatecake I've been wearing the same warm stuff for years. You don't need to keep buying them.

How much you spend is dependent on a few things. How much money you have coming in; how much you like new clothes and how many clothes you need for work (some wear uniform), with the amount of cash you have being the most important. I've never had £100 a month spare to spend on clothes.

FruitCider · 13/11/2016 18:13

Everythingfor5pounds is my friend. This year I have spent £110 on there, this includes 5 pairs of shoes and my graduation outfit, a dress for my friends wedding, and other various bits.

Jeans and underwear come from primark, I've done 2 shops for the entire family there totalling £130.

I've also spent about £50 in charity shops.

So about £300 altogether? And this has been an expensive year for me as I have gone down a dress size.

I would highly recommend everythingfor5pounds if you are not bothered about brands. Even the shoes are a fiver a pair!

So yes, I think £100 a month is extremely excessive.... although I do pay £65 for a cut and blow dry every 8 weeks Blush

Batsh1tcrazy · 13/11/2016 18:13

I wish I had a spare £100 every other month for clothes lol I only buy clothes on a need to basis

FruitCider · 13/11/2016 18:14

Oh, I forgot £65 on my work shoes!

mammamic · 13/11/2016 18:19

What BackForGood said on page 1

JennyPocket · 13/11/2016 18:21

2kids Grin Ha, I do accumulate clothes and don't have a "one in, one out" policy. Although I wish I did! I tend to buy clothes that I love, they aren't necessarily "fashion" but I pick clothes that have some style, detail and are a colour that suits me. Because I have lots of clothes, I don't really wear them out (with the exception of everyday jumpers which have had a lot of wear) as skirts don't really wear out, coats don't wear out when you have quite a few etc. Same for summer dresses, skirts, tops and sandals.

Also because I love nearly all my clothes for style, colour and detail I see them as more than just tops n' trousers to keep me warm, kind of thing. My friends and family do say I dress nicely, there's no designer labels though except for the odd handbag I've had as a gift.

No walk-in wardrobe either! It is separated into summer and winter. I put the out of season items in storage in the house. I'm not sure what I'd do if we didn't have storage space, my wardrobe is stuffed with current cold-weather stuff as it is, there is not the physical space for any summer stuff!

Sometimes I do wish I had a totally pared down wardrobe but I know I would want to just "add a bit" here and there and I would be back to square one, I'm a clothes collector really!

BeccaAnn · 13/11/2016 18:21

I don't think I spend £100 on my clothes in a year!

Badhairday1001 · 13/11/2016 18:30

I thought that sounded like a lot but after thinking about it I probably spend that much on my clothes. Not monthly but I can easily spend a few hundred every couple of months. I've spent a lot going in to winter because my old coat was falling to bits and my boots had a hole in the bottom. I can afford it but don't particularly want to spend this much, I am going to try and budget.

w12newmum · 13/11/2016 18:33

Seems plenty to me and I think I dress pretty well, albeit 95% from the sales/outlet of high end high street. I tend to pick up the odd things through the year and then splurge 2 times and year.

ilovechocolate07 · 13/11/2016 18:34

I probably spend roughly that much on myself per month.

Doublechocolatecake · 13/11/2016 18:34

Well I do, things get lost, worn, stolen, my weight may go up and down. Which means I need to buy bigger/smaller clothes I may need things for a party/wedding.. holidays..... the list goes on and on.. a work interview... that doesn't include, hair, underwear, PJ's, make up, perfume, my eyebrows being waxed or my nails...

I just feel as though sometimes as women we get so caught up in motherhood that we forget to look after ourselves and remember that yes the kids need clothes, school dinner, bill etc need to be paid but we also are individuals as well who deserve to take care of ourselves every now and again.
