My husband & I are separated & I have taken out an injunction against him after a nasty turn of events at the weekend.

I recently stayed in a hotel which he found the name of. He then phones said hotel who give him my email address (which he didn't know) & my home address (which he didn't know).

AIBU to want to rip them a new one ?

Fucking hell definitely not no.
Surely confidentiality data protection and safe guarding rules apply to every one including hoteliers.

jayisforjessica · 09/11/2016 12:31

I don't think you're BU. The hotel has no right to give out your personal details.

He may have got around them by saying he's your husband, but... I mean if I were a bloke I could have called up and said the same thing, couldn't I? Did they verify it at all? What proof did he offer? And did they not stop to think that as your husband, he should HAVE that information, and if he doesn't, something is clearly amiss?

I'd be putting in a formal complaint if it were me. They need to have a reminder about privacy as it pertains to their paying guests.

Yadnbu, that's a serious breach of data protection

When you complain, do tell them the effect/potential effect this has had, they should take that into account when resolving it

BorpBorpBorp · 09/11/2016 12:44

That's incredible, I can't believe they divulged that information. That's a really basic thing and the staff should be hauled up for it.

FleurThomas · 09/11/2016 13:20

They broke the dpa. Take legal action.

TheCatsMother99 · 09/11/2016 13:22

Woah!!! That's terrible, they've breached data protection.

Them giving out personal details could have awful consequences.

Mynestisfullofempty · 09/11/2016 13:24

OP who told you this had happened, the hotel or your husband?

Mummyme1987 · 09/11/2016 13:27

Report to the ico.

user1478545823 · 09/11/2016 13:36

My husband told me & showed me the copy of the invoice that they emailed him.
I have contacted the hotel today & explained the very unsafe position I am now in and I am waiting to hear back.

Report it to the Information Commissioner.

Landoni112 · 09/11/2016 13:39

They have have broken the law.
You need to see a copy of their policies and see that members of staff are disciplined.
I would think you could sue for moving costs and emotional stress.

Mummyme1987 · 09/11/2016 14:09

i would see a solicitor about protecting you.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 09/11/2016 14:18

Report to the Information Commissioner at once.

In a previous workplace, a husband phoned up and checked details on his wife's insurance were correct.

He did not have permission to access the account, but was told the info anyway, as he had his wife's name and DOB.

He went to his wife's house and murdered her. He was abusive and she had fled to a secret address, which the insurance company happily gave him.

Please report it to the IC, the information they gave out could have put your life at risk.

OurBlanche · 09/11/2016 14:19

Oh dear! They are in a heap of trouble.

Spam and Landon are right, gather information, report to chain and IC, long, loud complaint.

I hope you are OK! Good luck

Mummyme1987 · 09/11/2016 14:26

Hasn't he broken the injunction? Can you report him to the police?

RaspberryOverloadTheFirst · 09/11/2016 14:26

I hope you are OK, an agree about complaining loudly. ICO, and don't let the hotel get away with minimising this. They really need to acknowledge they've fucked up badly.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/11/2016 14:33

Coffee, that's awful. Shock.
Op kick up a stink. A huge stink. Like the poor lady coffee was telling us about. The next person may not be as fortunate.

AyeAmarok · 09/11/2016 14:37

They really are not allowed to do that, unfortunately, whoever was on the end of the phone has massively fucked up.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/11/2016 14:45

Have you spoken to the Police about it?

The hotel have messed up totally. And they are not normally like this. My ex used to stay in hotels all the time for work. When I would legitimately try to get hold of him they were always very cagey. Rightly so.

ConvincingLiar · 09/11/2016 14:50

Did he do this before or after the injunction? If it was in force of report him to the court or the police for breach. I would report the hotel to the information commissioner.

scampimom · 09/11/2016 14:58

When did he tell you about it? And how? (as in, in what manner - taunting, matter-of-fact etc, not "via email" I mean)

ToffeeForEveryone · 09/11/2016 15:04

Information Commissioner's Office hotline: 0303 123 1113

Definitely report them. Completely out of order.

Me2017 · 09/11/2016 15:05

I remember our GP once calling to confirm my husband's vasectomy appointment (about which I knew nothing!)

It is so very very easy for places to breach these rules without bad intent. I bet the DPA is breached every few seconds all day long. It is very serious but most infringements do not lead to prosecutions and the costs of suing make it not worthwhile so all we can do is have a few test cases a year with huge fines and hope that puts people off and ensures they train staff.

As somieone says the husband may have breached the injunction so this might land him in jail - that might well be the most fruitful route. Change email address right away. perhaps beef up security at home too.
