To hijack AIBU as I'm worried about coil cramps and on my own.

DH is away as usual. I had an emergency coil fitted yesterday. Fitting didn't hurt but I've got period cramps and they feel really unpleasant. Is this normal? Will it stop? How soon can I have it out? Horrible being on my own with 3 kids when medical things happen. Please help!

I had horrible cramps for about a week after having mine fitted and was worried like you. I'm sure it is fine.

I had some shockers for the first few months. They were bad the first few days and then eased off, coming back roughly once a month.

I can highly recommend Buscopan and anything containing naproxen (think Feminax ultra has it?).

2.5 years in and I love my coil.

I had this. All was fine but I then bled heavily (very heavily) and it was a bit of an emergency. Paracetamol but be alert for bleeding.

It's fine. You've only had it a day.

If you had it as an emergency, do you think you're pregnant and want to not be? Because if that's the case I would be doubly sure that the cramps are normal.

(Mine pinched going in, cramps for less than an hour, then bled solidly for nearly a year. I didn't like it at all!)

Yes I kept it, copper coil, I'm 44 so this'll be my last type of contraception I reckon.

Mine was so sore the first night I was tempted to try and find the strings... Pretty uncomfortable on and off for a few days after, needing painkillers and hot water bottle, and then sore again my first few periods. 8 months on I'm totally pain free and period free and love it.

Give it a chance - even if nothing's amiss you've still got a spiky piece of plastic stuck up where one wasn't a couple of days ago, your body will take time to adjust.

I have one, fitted during the beginning of a period. I had awful cramps for the first two days which I was warned to expect. After that, it settled down. My periods are much heavier (from regular tampons to super plus) and some months I have cramps, but some months are just like my normal pain-free periods, except heavier.

I love my copper coil, it's my second one. I had a few cramps but nothing to write home about....took some painkillers and was fine. How painful on a scale of 1-20?

Thanks so much you lovely ladies! Just reread this thread about three times and feel so much better. I really hope it settles down so I can keep it. Am breastfeeding a three month old so only other option for me really is the barrier method.

I've never had a coil but read quite a few threads about them...and the horror stories (where somethings gone wrong) always have a lot more than bad cramps as a symptom...more gushing blood and horrendous pain.

It's probably fine op, women get awful cramps just on a normal period with no outside involvement...when someone's been messing with you down there, it's bound to feel crampy/sore/bruised for a while
