Drones should just be made illegal

So now some criminals have escaped from prison because drones were used to drop in diamond cutting tools. There is virtually no legitimate use for these things - they are mainly used for invading peoples privacy or to enable criminal activity. It's time they were just banned IMO.

Yabu.. Lets ban mobile phones, ipads, computers, long lens camera, candles, Lets just all go back to the stone age.

Unbelievable.

The main thing that does worry me about drones is the potential for them to collide with aircraft.

Commercial drones are so light weight and tiny that most planes would hit them and destroy them without even noticing. Like birds. Sure there's the chance one could get sucked into an engine, but even then.... Also, it would have to be timed for when they are landing as commercial drones can't fly at the same height as planes.

Also, most commercial drones can only operate at a few dozen meters from the controller, and given that most airports are in the middle of nowhere it would be hard for someone to get close enough to the aircraft to fly it. Dubai airport is an exception because it's in a highly populated area.

Aircraft deal with frozen chickens on a regular basis, I'm sure a drone would be fine Smile

Frozen chickens don't have batteries that are known to explode and you cant strap something explosive to a chicken and control it on your phone!

Could always strap a galaxy note 7 to a chicken, wouldn't have any control over it but guaranteed to explode

IAmNotAMindReader · 08/11/2016 20:06

jdoe8 You're really reaching now aren't you. 1st it was they're all used for nefarious ends, then it was hobbyists without a clue (all of which already have legislation which just needs enforcing) and now it's the risk of explosion.

Anything with a lithium ion battery is susceptible to exploding if not treated with respect plus drones have a return to base function whereby low power and other faults such as a battery problem (which would be detected before it got to boom status) puts the drone on a course back to the location it took off from and lands it.
Plus, anyone who mistreats the types of batteries these things use to the extent they may explode (incorrect voltages used when charging etc) is much more liable to blow their own hands off while charging them than have anything happening whilst in operation.

jdoe8 · 09/11/2016 15:59

There is not proper legislation, you can fly them over private land and that can not be right.

I imagine someone that is using a drone for bad things has overrided the safety features that some may have.

Re knifes and cars there are laws in place over these, you can't just carry them around or buy them and use them

Don't tell Sainsbury's. I bought a set of basic cutlery from them the other week, including knifes. Are you suggesting I should not have been able to do so?

IAmNotAMindReader · 10/11/2016 13:34

The only result of disabling the safety features of return to base would be the bloody thing looses its gps lock and fucks off to infinity and beyond with no one able to control it, till it runs out of power and drops out of the sky. How is that going to be useful to someone using a drone for bad things? Plus the civil aviaton authority does have heavy penalties in place for those acting like idiots and breaching its legislation.
You truly have lost all credibility now jdoe8

I have mixed feelings about them.

I imagine it's great to be able to get aerial views.

However I got quite irritated by one in the summer when I was out walking my dogs with DS in a local nature reserve, someone was flying one over the trees and Lake, and through the canopy of trees above our heads for ages and all I could hear was its whining motor instead of birds cheeping. It went back and forth for some time. I think even the swans had had enough after a while.

Sometimes it feels like we've reached a time when technology has intruded everywhere so that you can't even take a country walk without people talking loudly on mobiles or flying drones above your head.

I don't think they should be banned, but self regulation should be encouraged so it doesn't infringe on others' enjoyment.'
