I can afford the monthly payments easily, and luckily i'm salaried. But my only issue is you pay it back over 36 months, and theres a part of me that thinks what if? what if I lose my job and I have to pay this back in one go?
It would be a huge help to my dh, he's wanted it for ages and it would be great for his work.

WWYD?

Have had a Surface Pro for less than a year and it's back in for reapir on a faulty screen. Added to the fact that it's a massive PITA to work on when you're not at a desk and i think it'll be sold the minute we get it back.

Have just bought a Dell laptop as a replacement. Same spec as the new Macbooks but a couple of hundred pounds less.

I think it depends on how much he needs it, or if it's just a 'luxury'.
I wouldn't get into debt for a luxury. to me a luxury is something you save up for.

I would never, ever, spend £900 on a Windows/Microsoft product Shock

ChuckGravestones · 07/11/2016 22:12

Me neither. If he needs it for work, then it should come out of work funds.

Amazon do a 0 percent interest free loan with barclays finance (similar to the one Apple offers). I personally would get it from there rather than salary sacrifice.

Another poster advising no to buying anything through salary sacrifice schemes. SS decreases your pension pot; not a good idea.

LotisBlue · 07/11/2016 23:06

I think it would also decrease your maternity pay, if you are planning any babies. I have childcare vouchers and didn't realise till it was too late that my maternity pay would be based on my salary after the vouchers came out.

Anything on a three-year credit would need to still be useful and valuable for at least as long as that, if not twice as long. I would definitely not take out a three-year loan on a piece of IT equipment. If t is to help your husband's work, shouldn't he (if self-employed) or his employer be buying it and putting t correctly through the books as an expense which can be deducted for tax?

Honestly, it sounds like a messy, long-term situation for an unclear benefit. If you weren't already making plans for a three-year financing of this specific item, then the existence of this opportunity should not change your mind.

Both my husband and work in IT. He won a surface at a conference he went to. If we'd have know just how crap it was we'd have sold it when it was still in the box

I compromised and bought a much cheaper tablet... for myself ;)
