Why are fireworks still on sale if they are so dangerous?

Every year, thousands of people end up in A&E because of fireworks, smoke inhalation, severe burns, many of the accidents in which children are victims. Yet I think I have read more posts about people complaining about Halloween on Mumsnet than posts about people complaining/stating how dangerous fireworks (during private parties, not large official displays) are. AIBU to think this is just not right? If fireworks are that dangerous surely something should be done about it?

Once you ban them the black market opens up and they become more dangerous as they aren't properly tested etc

Do you have another argument for fireworks?
You are wearing out the f, u, and n on your keyboard and it's getting really boring.

If that's all you have, then we might as well not bother further.

it's getting really boring

If that's all you have,

Really?

The restrictions on fireworks work very well in Ireland (north and south) and no-one seems to suffer as a result. There's no black market on fireworks

There's no reason why we can't do the same here.

You seem to have no other argument except fun.

Injured children? Oh but it's fun.
Upset pets? It's even more fun.
Injured horses? Never mind, it's fun.
Disturbed sleep? I don't care, I'm having fun.
Children who can't sleep because of the constant racket through the night? It's ok, some of us are having fun.

wasonthelist - I have spent 2 weeks having to tranquilise my dog. My grandad, who is a WW2 veteran and suffers from dementia, has serpent 2 weeks cowering in terror at the 'shell-fire' going off. I couldn't get a flying fuck if down people think it's fun. Fun for some people is far less important than the misery and disruption it causes to others. It's not just a few people eating hot dogs and setting off fireworks one night a year and it's disingenuous to pretend it is - it's a 2 week long barrage that results in disruption, trauma and injury so no - your right to have fun is not more important.

I read some horrific posts on FB from Ireland about behaviour over Halloween when apparently a lot of young folk go completely mad, particularly with bonfires. It seems that there are firework displays, they can't be bought privately, but bonfires are set up all over the place with little control. I often used to be in Ireland at Halloween in the 70s and there was no trick or treating, fireworks or bonfires. I don't know where it's come from but seems to be a big problem in some areas.

GinIsIn · 06/11/2016 22:55

And please excuse the typos but I have had very little sleep as people near us were letting off fireworks until 4am last night. Gosh, WHAT FUN! Hmm

GinIsIn · 06/11/2016 22:57

And lastly - comparing it to knives or cars is just fucking stupid! You need a license to drive a car and there are restrictions in place to buy a knife!! Hmm

nothanksbyenow · 06/11/2016 23:02

You can't really compare annual statistics of accidents between cars that are driven ALL YEAR ROUND to fireworks related accidents that are isolated to 2-3 weeks of the year.

I had a near miss one bonfire night a few years ago as I was walking home in the evening. A firework shot out of an upstairs window a few houses away and wound up in the bushes a couple of metres from the pram I was pushing my kid in. Realllly wasn't much fun to be had in that.

Yes, people are allowed to take risks but - and this is the important bit - NOT on behalf of other people. If idiots want to blow their own fingers off, fine. If they want to put others at risk and terrify pets and kids whilst they're at it then no, they're not allowed to take those risks.
