Where do you keep your eggs?

Posted here for traffic.

Where do you keep your eggs? In stores they're kept on shelves, in a place I work (food related) they're kept in the fridge. Most people I meet feel one way or the other is the only safe place to put them.

What do you do?

My chickens are vaccinated against salmonella but the supplier did this, not me, and I don't think the immunity is lifelong. Salmonella is often transmitted to chickens by wild birds and rats so tends to be more of a problem where there are large quantities of birds and therefore more feed/waste to attract vermin. Though there are now people saying that rise in backyard chickens is contributing to a rise in salmonella cases, so who knows ...

In the fridge, but not to keep them fresh, but because there is a handy space to keep them, and it saves cupboard space.

Topseyt · 06/11/2016 21:21

I have always kept them in the fridge and never had a problem.

I do like some of those hen shaped storage pots though that keep them on the kitchen worktops. My problem would be that I barely have enough worktop space in my kitchen as it is.

Enidblyton1 · 06/11/2016 21:24

In their box on a kitchen surface.

I don't put them in the fridge, but I do wonder why my fridge came with an egg holder??!

jmh740 · 06/11/2016 22:06

In a ceramic chicken ( that i inherited from gran and love very much ) on the kitchen window sill

Ah ha! The plot thickens...

Fridge as no where else for them and keeps them well.

Gymnopedies · 06/11/2016 22:18

They keep longer/better in the fridge.
They are kept on shelves on store because if they were kept in a fridge they would have a layer of condensation on them by the time you get home. This condensation/layer of water makes the eggs go off.

ifcatscouldtalk · 06/11/2016 22:23

loving this thread because I have never thought this through. Eggs in my house go in the fridge as thats where the egg holder is (inside the door). The fact they are not in a fridge at the supermarket never entered my head! Grin.

MistressMolecules · 06/11/2016 22:32

I keep mine in the fridge, I'm well aware in store they are on shelves but I just can't seem to do that at home (I also don't have masses of cupboard or worktop space anyway even if I could bring myself to leave them out.

AnotherGreenDot · 06/11/2016 22:47

Always in fridge, they are a perishable protein food like meat or dairy and would go off very quickly if kept at ambient.
Always wondered why they're stored at ambient in the shop though.

BeALert · 06/11/2016 23:06

I live in the US and keep mine in the fridge. I didn't know about the washing, I just have no cupboard space for them.

Me too - being in the US I naturally have a fridge the size of a small planet ;-)

NicknameUsed · 07/11/2016 07:22

"Always wondered why they're stored at ambient in the shop though."

Because they don't go off quickly as they aren't as perishable as meat and dairy. Where on earth did you get that idea from?

80sWaistcoat · 07/11/2016 07:27

I'd keep them on the side but DH always puts in fridge when I do. He doesn't like stuff on work tops and don't have much cupboard space.

They last for ages tough wherever you keep them. Still good for baking after weeks...

SquatBetty · 07/11/2016 07:39

In a wire mesh bird shaped holder on the kitchen windowsill - it's more of a pigeon shape rather than a chicken shape. Used to keep them in the fridge but we only have a small fridge so figured it made more sense to keep them outside of it.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/11/2016 07:53

In the chicked shaped wire basket thing on the kitchen shelf.

arlene123 · 07/11/2016 08:16

Why then is there an egg tray in a fridge!?!

RandyMagnum2 · 07/11/2016 14:21

In the cupboard, they don't need refrigerating.

WankingMonkey · 07/11/2016 14:23

I didn't realise you weren't meant to keep them in the fridge...why the hell do most fridges come with an egg rack thing in them?! I have always kept them in the fridge Blush

CoughingForWeeks · 07/11/2016 14:26

In the fridge. I know they don't need to be kept in there and I get through so many that they'd never have chance to go off, but it's one less thing on my already cluttered worktops.

Redpony1 · 07/11/2016 15:47

I've never known eggs kept in a fridge?! All kinds of crazy!!

They come off the shop shelf, on to my kitchen cupboard shelf. No refrigeration needed :)

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 07/11/2016 15:52

Mine are in the fridge as I have no pantry and can't bear any more stuff out on the counter tops. Sadly I also keep my potatoes, carrots, tomatoes etc in the fridge due to lack of a cool place in the kitchen. My corridor is freezing but there's no space for a veg/egg rack.

It's not an "idea", it's something lots of people do, including many other posters on this thread. It keeps the eggs fresher for longer so I prefer it.It's my choice.I respect your choice not to refrigerate, now please can you respect my choice?
This NHS website also recommends refrigerating eggs:
www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Goodfood/Pages/eggs-nutrition.aspx

FruJustFru · 07/11/2016 16:35

The first thing that gets removed when I buy a new fridge is the egg rack thingy - totally unnecessary for eggs (in the UK) - and it frees up some space for other 'fridgeable' products!

HeCantBeSerious · 07/11/2016 16:38

I buy them 6 dozen at a time and keep them in a giant bowl on the kitchen window ledge.
