Please advice,usually very brave child crying her eyes out with earachethree years old. Had anti bs for bad ear infection,just finished course. Ibuprofen not helping. Alleviated position not helping

Give paracetamol as well - by alternating paracetamol and ibruprofen (with the correct dosage spaced out) you can get ongoing pain relief

If it's that bad I would call out of hours for advice. I had a terrible ear infection as a teenager and the doctor came out and gave me pethidine. I was hallucinating and in agony. I believe you can give paracetamol and ibuprofen together which might help.

Go to A & E I have suffered from ear problems for years. They will at least give her more effective painkillers. It may be that the infection is deep on her canal and may need a wick. Total sympathy ear pain is horrific

If she's finished the ABs and it's still painful then the infection is still there.
Was it amoxycillin? That is the mildest antibiotic and not always effective at fighting a bad infection, particularly if she's had courses of it before.

I would advise getting her to an out of hours doctor tomorrow for more anti biotics.

As suggested, painkillers eg calpol and sometimes putting a piece of dry cotton wool in the ear helps.

You'll have to check the dosage/time between doses though. Perhaps ring 111 and ask them?

Obviously she'll need more anti b's ASAP so do you have a walk-in centre you could take her to tomorrow?

Yep can give ibuprofen and paracetamol together in this scenario. I would call out of hours in your shoes (eldest suffered badly with earache and I'll never forget holding her while she screamed hysterically).

I might do Mrs bungle,she is screaming at me to give her more medicine but its not time yet... She's usually really stubborn about admitting to pain or illness so must be bad

Someone told me they suffered bad war aches as a child and it helped to apply pressure to that side so she'd lay with her poorly ear against mattress.

Apparently if they are elevated it takes some of the pressure off as laying down can cause the fluid pressure to build up or push and gains sore part.

Guessing it's finding what helps your child - whether pressure on ear, warmth or elevating or something

It sounds awful. I also think you should ring 111, a doctor will ring back and advise you and they can also fast track you an appointment at your nearest out of hours.
Try not to panic, it's horrible when your children are ill.

There is nothing stopping you giving paracetamol alongside ibuprofen, they are different drugs.

Give her some paracetamol and call out of hours. Poor little mite must be suffering if she's asking for medicine, they don't normally do they?

Poor wee thing. My ds has always suffered terribly with ear infections as did I when I was younger - very sore. Hope she's better soon.

I don't like earache in a child. It is something you cannot see and it can have implications in the future. I would ring 111 just to be assured.

Is there swelling around the entrance to the ear canal OP? I had a nasty ear infection a few years back, to the point where it was swollen outside and I was in agony. My ear drum ended up bursting from the pressure, so if it's that bad I'll chime in with the peanut gallery and say take her to out of hours.
