Cinema munchies?

I feel like a moaning ole bag so thought I'd seek opinion from the aibu mn's...
went to the cinema this pm with 2 friends...FFS munching, slurping, crunching, lip smacking people all around us! It was driving me nuts...I could barely concentrate with all the rustling and 'squanching'! One of my friends thought it was hilarious that I was getting so peed off... WIBU??

YANBU it drives me nuts too.

If you really can't get through film without eating/drinking, or even if you just don't want to...at least have the decency not to let it disturb others.

Ditto people using their phones that light up all over the place.

I hate it too. I've started deliberately booking front row seats as that area is often emptier, or sometimes splashing out on our local VIP screen - bliss as it has huge squishy leather chairs and separate booths, so it's almost like having your own private cinema!

I was at the cinema this morning with our grandson. Why do they sell popcorn in bags that make so much noise?
Surely the cinemas could use better packaging.

It's normal to eat in the cinema. I don't even notice it.

Do you not go to the cinema very often?

How did they know you were getting peed off?

Pineapple that is definitely worth exploring!
Almond: I don't go that often...
My friends knew it was bugging me because I told them... one agreed and one wasn't bothered...
we went for a drink afterwards and discussed I get that they make profit from selling 'refreshments' but I said I'd happily pay more for an 'eat free zone'!
I'm a grumpy old bugger, I know!

People chomping, rustling and slurping (and talking/using mobiles) have pretty much stopped me going to the cinema at all. It ruins the experience.

No idea why people can't last for a couple of hours without a vat of coke, popcorn, sweets etc. They have the right to do it and all I can do is stay away, but I wonder whether they have any idea of the extent to which they're spoiling it for others.

Maybe it doesn't bother them so it doesn't occur to them that it might bother others, or maybe they're too selfish to care.

Rustle-free packaging is an excellent idea. Having said that, I would also pay extra for a food-free cinema.

I don't go to the cinema any more due to other people. That and it's too LOUD.

I don't understand why people have to chomp their way through buckets of popcorn etc when watching a film, and the hot cheesy nachos should be made illegal IMO.

Seems actually watching the film is pretty low priority for a lot of people, eating, checking their phones and getting up and down to the loo is way more important.

I don't get wound up by eating noises. People on their bastard phones though lighting up the entire place with what they think is a surreptitious peek at it need beating to death with their own shoe.

Phones should not be on in the cinema. It is against the rules. Anytime I've seen someone turn one on, someone will immediately approach them and get them to stop.

I've seen a couple of these food threads on AIBU, and they are genuinely useful. It would never have occurred to me that eating bothered people, and I'm much more aware of how and when we eat in the cinema now due to AIBU. We tend to have icecream (silent) and finish it before the trailers end.

Hate this. But far worse, it has become a real thing at THE THEATRE!!! If people cannot get through a 55min piece of children's theatre without ruining it for everyone around them eating a three course meal of crisps and sweets etc., then... Sorry, speechless...

^^ I paid over £40 for a theatre ticket recently and people behind me munched, unwrapped sweets etc etc the whole time, it was so off putting and I was really disappointed. I haven't bothered to go to the theatre or cinema since.

Why can't people eat before they go into the theatre/cinema?

I don't think it's a case of they can't get through it without eating, of course them can, more it's they enjoy eating whilst watching the movie, it's part of the treat for them.and makes it more enjoyable.

I also find it irritating to be honest, I used to work in a cinema when at uni and I cantell uou it's shocking what some people buy to eat, the sheer volume.

My new annoyance (used to phones & food) is those flashing shoes. So kids tapping their feet set them off constantly.

DH and I don't get out at all much without DC and have been to the cinema once this year (Star Wars). I had a trough of popcorn and a huge pick 'n' mix. And a coke too! It was pure joy. I couldn't care less what anyone in that room thought of my slurping and chewing.

Depends on what it is thought surely, I'm sure you only used to ever be able to buy boxes of popcorn or chocolate/ sweets none of which are that annoying. It's the huge bags of rustly Doritos and crunching nachos they serve now that are so irritating!

The worst though are the cinemas that serve alcohol I had some guy sit behind me once who constantly burped warm beer belches over my shoulder throughout the film. Was hideous.

A huge proportion of cinema profits is from the food and drink concessions. Many cinemas would have to close down if they stopped selling snacks.

Maybe take this up with the cinema? Snacking and drinking is definitely encouraged so you can hardly take issue with people doing it.

As an aside it was mentioned to me by a non-expert that excessive annoyance over eating sounds is possibly an OCD trait. I can't stand noisy eating but I can't say I've ever heard it over he sound of a film.

Going to the cinema and having popcorn go hand in hand, no? I'm sorry but I think yabu. When I (very rarely) go to the cinema, it's a treat. And I enjoy getting popcorn as part of the experience. It's been around for years and years. I am mindful and keep noise to a minimum but having popcorn at the cinema (or other snacks) is normal!
