To ask for tax related advice ! (Instead of ring the tax office again)

I have recently given up my career and now have two jobs .
I will over the 11 k tax threshold this year as my previous job was 15k pa .
I now have one main job 3 days a week and one day of work from a cleaning company .
I rang the tax office as I don't really understand tax related things and have not thought about before .
I don't understand but re my second job - which pays 8.07 per hour in taxes at 20!% so I only get six pounds and a few pence per hour.
I assumed that I wd get the difference refunded back to me in April but the tax office said I won't do insffect I'm working fir belllow minimum wage until April .
They said when it comes to April I can split my tax allowance - whatever that is - between the two jobs and I then won't pay tax .
Does all this sound correct ?i don't want to work for 6 quid per hour in the cleaning job really . Any advice sovappriciated !

How often are you paid in your new jobs, weekly or monthly.

It all sounds about right. If you only begun your new job in October your records won't have caught up yet.

Been on br tax at cleaning job since Aug
Was in old job at same time
Now on the two new jobs and both paid monthly
I'm happy to wait for it to sort out but from what folk seem to be saying is that due to my old job I will have gone over my tax allowance
Hence the br bring applied ?

That's impossible to answer without knowing the figures on your P45 & your gross pay & tax paid to date.

When you were in your old job if that was £15k per year then yes all your allowance would be used up in that so your 2nd job would be basic rate.

Now you are in a lower paid job(s) that might re-adjust.

(I work in payroll)

OohNoDooEy · 06/11/2016 15:17

You have to wait until April. Get all your p45s and p60s together and see how much you have earned and paid over the year then request a refund if you're due one

Balletgirlmum · 06/11/2016 15:18

The OP may not have to wait until April now because of RTI

ginorwine · 07/11/2016 13:29

Tax code 1073
Pay to date 9072 .00
Tax to date 561 .60

By my calculations you have so far paid th correct amount of tax.

ginorwine · 07/11/2016 15:52

So does that mean I will continue to pay case rate on my cleaning job please ? Thanks .

That depends on what your monthly salary will be from now on in your new job.

ginorwine · 07/11/2016 19:19

400 or less

Both jobs combined or just job no. 1.

Assuming both jobs combined then next month your gross pay to date will be £9,472 so what will probsbly happen is that the payroll software from Job 1 will realise that you have now overpaid tax so you will either not be taxed at all or actually receive a tax refund in that payslip.
Job 2 you will still be taxed at 20% because job 2's payroll software won't know this.

Both employers will make their submissions to HMRC & so at sometime during the next couple of months your NI number will link the two records & one or both employers may receive a letter adjusting your tax code.

This might be as soon as the beginning of January but if the system is slow it might be the next tax year when it all balances out.

Thanks for info
I appriciated it .

I have found out the answer st last !
I have to pay 20% on my cleaning job until April and it won't be refunded . This is because the remaining tax allowance is for now on my main job . In April I can split the allowance if I choose to . My allowance has been changed from 1073 to 1100 but I have no idea why. Am being refunded £40 from main job due to paying too much .
Thanks all - this new stuff to me .

The 1100 is the standard tax code most will be on with one job. That's the code that says you get the full 11000 tax free income. I'm guessing you were on the 1073 tax code because of your previous job so you were only getting the first 10730 tax free from the job with that 1073 tax code. This is just a guess as I remember my DM talking to me about tax code. She and my DSIS work for HMRC.

Great to hear that it is now sorted for your main job. Keep going with the two because in April you can then change your tax codes so you have 2 jobs with a little tax free allowance.

Theoretician · 08/11/2016 13:58

The important thing to understand is that splitting the code between jobs will make no difference to the overall amount of tax you owe for the year.

If the main job generates more than the personal allowance it would be simplest to allocate all of the personal allowance there. By definition secondary jobs are more likely to come and go, so it's creating unnecessary admin to allocate some allowance to them.

On the other hand, if the main job doesn't use up the personal allowance, then splitting it with other jobs means you can sort things out in advance and don't have to trust HMRC to set things right at year-end. (I assume they do this reliably for people who don't do tax returns, but I can't speak from experience. I've always done tax returns, which force the correct calculations to be made.)
