AIBU to become vegetarian?

I recently came across post on Facebook about cruelty in the abattoirs.
Just thinking about it make me feel sick.
We have dogs as our best friends. They share our beds and become full family members.
Meanwhile pigs who have a very similar and playful character are being slaughtered for meat. More than 900 million farm animals are killed for food each year in Britain (www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/aug/28/fsa-4000-breaches-animal-welfare-laws-uk-abattoirs-two-years).

I have dairy intolerance and so has DD. And she is intolerant to soya too.
It is going to be very complicated to feed us on vegetarian meals and get a balanced diet! AiBU to become vegetarian?

I decided to become a responsible meat eater and reduce my meat consumption but due to the limits of my budget I still buy cheap meat and wonder what kind of cruelty was used against this animal killed for my dinner. And doing this does not feel enough.

I thought, as long as you do it properly, that dogs can be vegetarian, they are omnivores, like us, not carnivores, like cats.

ChopStick. I used to think that halal slaughter was less humane but after reading up on it I don't see a problem with it. The throat is cut with a razor sharp knife and it has to be done cleanly. Apparently they are required not to process the animals as quickly as non halal animals. I haven't witnessed it myself but I would bet that the last thing they would want would be for the animals to get anxious or injured. It would be difficult and dangerous to slit the throat of a distressed animal.

Again, I know there have been a few disturbing instances where people running or working at halal abattoirs have been prosecuted for animal cruelty but I suspect this is very unusual. It doesn't make any financial spence to spend time being cruel to the animals

I do believe that halal meat should be clearly labeled though to give consumers choice over whether they wish to eat it.

Not read all of the thread, but go for it. I dare say, you probably won't go back.

Reading further it seems that over 90% of Halal slaughtered meat in UK is stunned before the muslim prayers are recited and the throat cut. My understanding is that this goes against true Halal meat procedures where the animal is NOT stunned. Stunned animals are used by Pizza Express and Subway and KFC. Now I am wondering how Muslims feel about that as it is not true Halal.

That claim about halal meat being dominant in the supply chain... are there really that many Muslim men working in abbatoirs? I am just stunned if it's true. Also, the bleeding thing -- done properly it means making a mess that requires high hygiene controls (I thought).

I thought most cows were still killed by bolt-guns, for instance.

B12 doesnt ONLY come from animal sources. You will find soya milk is very high in b12 :)

I don't think i could ever go vegetarian to be honest. I don't eat a lot of meat, i'm incredibly fussy about the fat and gristle and the look of most meat puts me off, especially mince meat. I won't touch sausages because of the crap meat and offal etc in them. I occasionally have bacon but only a few times a year, and i dislike fish. That being said i do enjoy chicken, which is a shame as its the worst treated animal there is. If i could afford to only eat free range i definitely would, but it's a luxury i cannot afford. I try to substitute with quorn on a regular basis, my dad is a huge meat eater and if it's in the house, i'd rather eat it than bin it as that seems even more disrespectful to the animal.

RoundandAroundSheGoes · 06/11/2016 00:14

Go for it, OP :) I went vegetarian at 16 and vegan this year.

Yeah, it's "not easy" in the sense that reading packets and getting into new habits is a bit of a faff. But it really pales in comparison to the massive-scale torture of animals that goes on every single day.

The thought of willingly consuming their flesh makes me feel sick now. Or milk, stolen from pregnant cows whose babies have been ripped away from them. Even free range hens have their beaks clipped without anaesthetic.

StrawberryLime · 06/11/2016 02:03

Hmm. Nothing wrong with being veggie/vegan. DH is a veggie, and as a family we don't each much meat.
(Rest of us eat meat, but not a lot.)
However, you say your dd is intolerant to dairy, and soya too. This would make me reluctant to cut out another perfectly good food group when there's no medical need. It's just further restricting.
I'm allergic to eggs, intolerant to milk and sensitive to too much wheat and yeast.
I may not like eating tons of meat but I'm not about to go vegan or veggie as it just means cutting out a food group I'm fine with which is daft!

Sorry you are completely 100% wrong. Cats and dogs NEED meat, have you ever seen a wolf or big cat on a nature program eat a plant???

They are evolved to eat a 100% meat diet, any vet will tell you the same.

RiverTam · 08/11/2016 08:18

I said cats were obligate carnivores, so therefore can't be vegetarian. And I said I thought dogs (not wolves) were omnivores so the could be vegetarian.

Do you want to read 100% of my posts before commenting next time?

maninawomansworld01 · 08/11/2016 23:30

Well there you have your answer, you thought wrong.
