AIBU to not give my presentation away following an unsuccessful job interview?

Hello, I've just been for a job interview. I've been told how marvellous I am (natch) and how wonderfully confident I am (not). I have been asked if I give them my presentation as a lot of work had obvs gone into it. The cost of the suit was £200, some journals for research was 50 quid and DH and DF think I should not give my research away. I don't want to p*ss them off, but in this job climate it feels that you have to give give give. On the one hand I want to please but on the other hand I'm tempted to feel its unprofessional of me to give proper work away for nothing. Help! Hmm

Offer them a day's paid consultancy to come in and take them through it.

Yup.

Are you sure the interview was unsuccessful? Have they explicitly said?

TygerTyger · 03/11/2016 11:49

Hi, yes I definitely didn't get the job. But I'm to consider future roles with them, apparently. TBH I've been through the mill so many times recently I'm spinning. I had a really good job, I was great at it and all the stat's backed me up. When I returned from mat leave they 'restructured' and you know where this ends. I'm still trying to make up the loss in earnings. In my current post I was asked to take on PM for a half a million contract two months ago, for no extra money. I'm only paid £27k. I'm punch drunk, frankly. And I can't see how I'm going to break through. Pathetic. I think I'm going to go and read some kick-ass feminist literature and eat cinnamon buns.

Tyger a PM role may add to your CV (or not if you have a tonne of experience) and you can always walk in half way through a contract and renegotiate on the basis of your achievements and make them fret you will leave them in the lurch I will admit I love negotiations and am a bit of a shark but there are ways and means to take where you are to where you want to go.

I imagine though the real issue is the confidence knocker you got from your last shower of wanker bosses after ML. You have this though, don't let them knock you down, you will get there.

Bluntness100 · 03/11/2016 11:58

If you wish to apply for jobs with them in the future, just give them the presentation. And be graceful about it, the fact they are asking may really mean they will consider uou for other roles.

Bluntness100 · 03/11/2016 12:02

Also they may not actually want or need the presentation, it could be they are showing they liked uou by asking and would seriously consider you for other roles,

Maybe they want to show another manager the presentation if they wish you to be considered for it,

I'd send it, sending a no or an invoice counts uou immediately out of anything good that may happen in the future,

DoinItFine · 03/11/2016 12:10

Saying no does not count you out for other roles.

Nobody is going to refuse to hire someone good because they politely declined a request like that.

If they really are interested in hiring you for other roles, your decision won't affect that as long as you are polite and professional.

It is entirely reasonable not to give away work for free. Nobody worth working for would hold that against you.

GeorgeTheThird · 03/11/2016 12:17

Of course you shouldn't give it to them for free. And if you do they will think you are a schmuck.

FatOldBag · 03/11/2016 12:17

YANBU, cheeky bastards. Flowers

mumofthemonsters808 · 03/11/2016 12:27

Do not part with it, if they really were blown away by you, you would of got the job or they would have even created a role just for you.Be mighty proud of yourself for putting together and presenting such sought after information, I bet you scored off the wall on that criteria. You also know that your presentation makes the grade when considering different jobs. Hold your head high, no ones ever wanted one of my boring, box standard presentations. Lick your wounds and put it behind you, keep pushing forward, somethings got your name on

StickyProblem · 03/11/2016 12:46

Don't send them it. I worked for 9 years for a company that thought if you give information away to be nice, your niceness will be rewarded by other business coming your way. It doesn't work like that, you just get taken for a mug.
The "to be considered for future roles" is just a dangling carrot to keep you sweet. Your mortgage company won't accept "I'm considering paying you from future money I may or may not earn", it wants to get paid, and so do you.
Agree with the offer to consult with them for £3k.
Good luck with the job hunt.

daisypond · 03/11/2016 13:22

No, don't give it to them. I've heard of this tactic before. They acquire your ideas for nothing and get someone in house to activate them, if they can.

Cheeky fuckers! I hope you don't give it to them.

zeezeek · 03/11/2016 14:44

Some companies do this a lot, create a job, you spend hours preparing and do a fantastic job only to find they have been using you for free consultancy, it's disgraceful.

Happened to my step son a couple of years ago. He was told to consider future opportunities with the blue chip company he'd gone to for an interview as well. No one was appointed - surprise, surprise. He now works for their opposition.

Shurelyshomemistake · 03/11/2016 20:44

You would be absolutely mad to give it to them for nothing.

Is it a commercial role? One that requires you to be persuasive/ demonstrate business accumen? If so they will not think highly of someone who rolls over so easily.
