Make me feel like a rubbish mum!

Don't do Pinterest, but have always done crafts and baking with my dc when they were little. They loved doing these things with mum, it was fun.

What is Popping?

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 02/11/2016 19:31

Why does someone else enjoying something make you feel rubbish? I bake and craft with my kinds (and I bloody love Pinterest) but I don't give a second thought to other mothers when doing activities with my own children. Don't like it? Don't do it. I don't think anyone is making a chest of drawers into play kitchen to make you feel like "a rubbish mum".

Are you ok? Honestly I do mean that, are you ok? Having something so simple make you feel rubbish is indicative of being a bit down.

QuoteMeYouFuckers · 02/11/2016 19:47

I don't feel like a rubbish mum buy I hate baking, painting and crafting too. In fact, when my dc were given some model dinosaur painting kit thing after a visit to Santa last year, it took so long to clean the paint off the table, chairs, floor and children that I actually threw all the paints and brushes away. Now they have pencils and felt tip pens and colour if/when they want to - I don't actively plan crafting activities. They do that at school/nursery/childminders.

QuoteMeYouFuckers · 02/11/2016 19:47

buy but I hate baking etc etc...

BillSykesDog · 02/11/2016 19:48

Why? People have different interests. A trip to the swings is just as good.

toomanypetals · 02/11/2016 19:52

Spell check changed it to 'popping' but it has a nice ring to it!

Was trying to be a bit jokey - it's been a long day...

I love craft. DC hate it. Neither is interested in baking either. I now focus my attentions on train activities as they are more successful.

OhhBetty · 02/11/2016 19:55

I love baking! But I hate crafts because I'm shit at anything like that! I don't have the energy to be jealous of people for enjoying things I don't enjoy. Seems like a road to misery.

Chottie · 02/11/2016 19:57

I love crafts and baking but DCs are too old now....... :(

RB68 · 02/11/2016 20:06

find a friend who likes it and send them round there once in a while - or a grannyor grandad or an aunty or uncle etc

AliceInHinterland · 02/11/2016 20:07

I get you OP. I actually like baking and crafting myself, but rarely find time, and my toddler is definitely not interested in picture perfect results, or doing one thing for more than about thirty seconds. There are plenty of other interests that you can transfer on to them!

Soubriquet · 02/11/2016 20:09

I do none of them here

Can't stand the idea of the mess

Plus ds is too young at the moment and liable to throw a wobbly when he doesn't get his own way

gillybeanz · 02/11/2016 20:33

Do you mean that because other mums do this with their kids and you don't that you feel inadequate?

If this is the case, please stop there. We all have different skills and likes.
I was terrible with building bloody lego, meccano and strategy games.
The kids knew they were on their own or with dh if he was home.

I think the trick is to find something you enjoy/ enjoyed as a child and do this with yours.
I mostly enjoyed role play, it was my favourite thing to do with them.
I have done baking, was really shit but tried and got better.
My crafts aren't much better, but I tried when they wanted me to join in.

You don't have to be brilliant, sometimes it's just nice to attempt things together. Mine, now as grown ups still remind me of "orrible cake" a concoction I made forgetting the butter. They were like rocks.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/11/2016 20:35

I don't think it should make you feel like this. Not being able to build a paper plane with your dcs doesn't make you a bad mother. Consider the ways you're winning in parenthood so far, are they housed, clothed and fed? If so then I'd say you're doing a bloody good job of it so far.

AliceInHinterland · 02/11/2016 20:38

I also comfort myself that if you are trying to do stuff perfectly it can put them off a bit, and they might be happier just freestyling creativity on their own sometimes.
Most of us are just flying by the seat of our pants trying to get by, most of the time, surely. Vladmirs is right.

fitzbilly · 02/11/2016 20:42

Why did it make you feel like a rubbish mum? Surely those things are a choice?

Look up Pinterest fails if want a laugh!Grin

allowlsthinkalot · 03/11/2016 19:39

Some people enjoy crafting and baking with their kids. Others enjoy riding bikes up mountains with them. Others can bond over computer games. Others ate natural musicians and their children benefit from that.

Different strokes for different folks, surely?
