Am I doing something wrong here?

I've NC so this is not connected to previous posts.

I'm a relatively new driver so I'm prepared to accept IABU if I'm doing something wrong, but I'm getting regular abuse from a cyclist as I'm leaving work and it's bothering me.

The entrance/exit to my workplace is on a fairly busy main road. To leave, I have to go up a steep hill, through gates that have a high wall either side and then pull out onto the road over the pavement (dropped kerb if that makes a difference). As I'm coming up the hill, I can't see the road, so I don't know if I can pull out or not, so can't wait on the hill if you see what I mean. I have to wait to pull out on the pavement.

Woman cycling on the pavement, stops and waits, visibly pissed off with me. The first time, she loses her patience and cycles off in front of me just as I go to pull off, and I have to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting her. She's not wearing a helmet so could have been badly hurt if I'd hit her. Cue a mouthful of abuse.

Today, traffic was bad so was waiting a while to pull off (but probably less than a minute all told) and she was there again, sighing and rolling her eyes constantly. Then cycled in front of me again with a very sarcastic "Thanks a lot!"

What am I supposed to do? Back down the hill again? Usually there's someone behind me and pedestrians usually wait or go behind cars that are waiting on the pavement.

WIBU to wait to pull out and make her wait too?

It sounds like a bugger of an exit to get out of, being on a hill and with a high wall you can't see past without pulling quite far out (bit of a design flaw, no??) but bottom line is she shouldn't be cycling in the pavement.

HummusForBreakfast · 01/11/2016 17:13

Yep, she is in the wrong. She shouldn't don't be on the pavement unless she feels really unsafe on the road (that's why it's ok for children to cycle on the pavement).
But even like this, she should act the same way than if she was a pedestrian. And a pedestrian would wait or go behind you.

SerendipityPhenomenon · 01/11/2016 17:16

Cyclists are allowed to cycle on some pavements - there's a long stretch of road near where I live where this is allowed. I would suggest you double check whether it's allowed on the pavement in question, there should be signs up indicating it. If it isn't allowed, next time you go up there have your window open and be ready to shout "Cycling on the pavement is illegal."

Would a pedestrian have to wait ?

Shouldn't the car wait for them if it is trying to cross the footpath?

AliceInUnderpants · 01/11/2016 17:33

If it's not a permitted cycle path, she is in the wrong.
But even though she shouldn't be on the pavement, neither should you, so surely when you look left and right as you go to pull out, if you see any pedestrian approaching, you should wait to pull out?

maggiso · 01/11/2016 20:23

I think a car crossing a pavement has to give way to pedestrians.

bluebeck · 01/11/2016 20:28

Yes, maggiso to pedestrians but not to bloody pavement cyclists. Sorry - pavement cyclists give me the rage - one knocked DS into a very busy road once when he was three.

YANBU OP. If she starts again, tell her you will report her for breaking the law and cycling on the pavement. Police wouldn't give a shiny shit but it will show her you know that it is her in the wrong.
