Mobile use while driving

I am so cross and fed up of seeing people using their phones while driving Angry I counted 5 today on a pretty short journey. Having read the news today regarding the tragic death of a mum and her 3 children due the a lorry driver using his phone, I am insensed that people continue to do this. What the hell can be that important.

I am not a technical person but could there be some way that devices could be automatically disabled while a vehicle is being driven. It seems like the only way because people just can't help themselves and fines and penalties are clearly not working.

AIBU to think more needs to be done about this?

I'm going to confess in the last I used to do this - mainly sat nav / changing a song etc.

I won't be doing it now Sad

I would be more distracted without music to be honest, music makes driving on my own bearable to me. I hate talking on the radio so I either listen to The Arrow (no talking) or music on a USB stick. (This may well go back to some of the old bangers I've had where music was necessary to drown out the strange noises they used to make as something went wrong!)

Confess away, rainyinnovember, in the early days of mobiles so did I once or twice before we were educated in the danger. The last time was in 1999 and I'm not going to beat myself up about it now.

I haven't read the whole thread, so maybe this has already been said..

but I think the govt should bring back those ads at prime time on the TV. Don't use your mobile, this is what happens etc. Make it completely unacceptable in everyones eyes.

Everyday I watch every other car either speaking or worse, texting on their phones whilst driving. REALLY PISSES ME OFF!

My dh was hit by a lorry while.the driver was on his phone he didn't even notice until bil an off duty police officer who was following behind managed to get him to stop. This was after he'd hit dhs car again taking the wing mirrors off. Disgusting, especially as it turned out to be dhs word against the lorry drivers Angry

Take away the phone number of those who are caught, and if you injure someone charge them with GBH as a minimum.

The list of things that are distracting is huge, being really tired is very dangerous but there aren't many of us who can say we haven't driven when really tired.
Judging by the fairly frequent threads on here discussing 'baby on board' stickers, people should understand that people with the stickers may be distracted/ very tired and give the vehicles more space Hmm

Ah, remember the good old days when people could make a car journey without speaking on the phone? Ok, there WERE no mobile phones, but somehow we managed it. We have become a society obsessed with instant gratification from texting, social media, and even occasionally actually talking to each other. People have no self discipline. My phones are constantly on silent so I don't react like some demented Pavlov's dog at every beep and tinkle. For those caught on their phones whilst driving - instant ban. For more serious circumstances - car crushed. For causing a death - life imprisonment. You make the choice, you face the consequences.

I once spotted a van driver. He had his phone in one hand and a coffee in the other. Shocking.
