To be completely confused about car seats

I need a new car seat for 7 month old ds. Was all set to buy the nuna rebl but I see now it's not safe at all! Can anyone recommend a different one?

Note - I was just recommending the cybex based on my own tall children still fitting in fine at 4.

According to people on the Facebook group, the Cybex Sirona will not last a child taller than about the 25th centile until they are 4. It will vary though, depending on whether the child is tall because they have a long torso or long lengths. My DS has a long body, so there was no way we were going to risk it.

The new isize group 1 seats like the Maxi CosI Pearl are only up to 105 cm tall. Depending on how tall your child is, this could be before age 4. The seat belted seats like the Axkid Minikid and the Britax Two Way Elite will go much taller than this. DS has consistently tracked the 50th centile so unlikely to be over 18 kg before he's 4 so would be fine weight wise with an isofix seat. However, given DH is 6.2 we bought a seat belted one rather than risk him growing out of an expensive seat height wise too soon.

The safest car seats are those that have passed the swedish plus test. Those are:

Axkid mini kid and rekid
Britax max way, max fix 2 and hi way 2
BeSafe izi plus, izi kid, izi modular
Concord reverso plus
Klippan kiss 2

But any car seat is only as good as it's fitting.

This FB group is really helpful:

We have a cybex sirona and the joie I-anchor advance. Mothercare currently have an offer on the Joie where you get a free base so brings the seat cost down to £175, just thought I'd mention it in case it's one you're considering! Car seats are a bloody mine field!!

Went and exchanged our nuna rebl for the recaro zero.1 this afternoon. Have to say I love it! Seems a lot sturdier than the rebl and the seat is more 'bucket' like seems to cocoon dd a lot better than the others in the show room. Buttons to release isofix are a lot more accessible and all the warning lights are on the from of the seat rather than next to each of the relevant parts.

It's passed all the relevant checks with flying colours including the adac one!

No na have been far from helpful in this from the first phone Call Roth up until exchange! The in car safety centre have been brilliant!!

Oh my gosh. My head is spinning from everything I have read today. I have agonised over what to replace the Rebl with. I think I am going Recaro Zero.1 as well. Dopey I am so glad to read a positive review, but am confused about whether it passed ADAC as some seem to say yes and others no. I don't want to end up in the same position.

I didn't want to go Cybex as I hate the impact shield and we really want to keep the swivel function as we are so used to it so the options are actually pretty limited.

Miloarmadillo1 · 03/11/2016 20:30

Get a free trial for the Which website and read their reviews and safety tests, which are much more rigourous than those needed to get the British Standard.

Artandco · 03/11/2016 20:33

Boat - the cybex shield is only used if forward facing, if you keep it rear facing no shield is used

Dopeydonut · 03/11/2016 20:51

Boat the recaro zero.1 did pass the ADAC test, I asked at the on car safety centre before we brought it. It scored 2.4 I think which is definitely a pass. The seat seems deeper so dd looks a lot more protected

Check with your local or central / main library.

Usually they have a subscription (I know Manchester does) to Which! magazine where you can find really in depth reviews on carseats, it's what I used when deciding on a seat.
