My DH keeps buying tons of chopped toms that need a tin opener rather than the ring pull type as I've asked him. He does the shopping every week, I do all the cooking and use tins and tins of chopped toms (spag Bol, chilli etc etc). It drives me mad to have to open them with a tin opener. I've asked and asked him to buy ring pull but he won't because they are (5p) more expensive. It gives me the RAGE! Buy the fucking ring pull!

And breathe.

I know IABU BTW.

Perhaps you should read this

originalmavis · 29/10/2016 15:00

I buy cartons now - apparently the tomatoes in cans are bad for you.

DesolateWaist · 29/10/2016 15:07

But thats that 'they' want you to think isn't it Raspberry.

ripples101 · 29/10/2016 15:08

raspberry

Thanks - just read it.

Will still refrain from buying tomatoes in a can though Grin

I'm with you on this, never buy any tins without ring pulls if I can help it! Hate tin openers with a passion, they're out to kill me ! I am left handed though which had never thought about before it was mentioned up post! And if only saving £26 a year by swapping to tin opener I can live with the wasted money!

DesolateWaist · 29/10/2016 15:30

Does corned beef still come in those tins with keys?
They were lethal.

MargotMoon · 29/10/2016 15:47

I hated all tin openers until I got a Culinaire Magican. I was going through the cheap ones on a monthly basis so decided to splash out and spend a few quid and have had it for 10+ years now.

However, YANBU OP! £26 per year is a small price to pay for your sanity Smile

DesolateWaist · 29/10/2016 15:55

OK, there must be something odd about tin openers that I was perviously unaware of.
I have had the same one since I left home over 20 years ago.
What is everyone finding so difficult?

sueelleker · 29/10/2016 16:06

desolatewaste; I cut my thumb on a corned beef tin in the mid 70's. had to go to A&E, and I've still got a scar.

LittlePaintBox · 29/10/2016 16:07

Blimey.

You're lucky your DH remembers staple ingredients, if my DH is let loose on the shopping he buys all sorts of bargain stuff they're getting rid of, but few ingredients to make meals out of them!

I'm interested to know what the big problem is about opening tins, though. I used not to be able to open tins because of very sore hands, so I do know it can be a problem. I just had to ask DH to do it in those days

Mozismyhero · 29/10/2016 16:25

I don't find it difficult but if I'm opening 4 or more on a row (I batch cook and freeze), it just saves a bit of effort on my part. It's just laziness!

Thought about this thread this morning - opening the ring pull cat food tin half asleep I forgot how they work Confused Blush and managed to pull the ring off - I then had to struggle opening it with the can opener -more difficult as then it comes apart on the bit you should pull off and it had a shaped bottom so I couldn't turn it upside down...
It would have been easier without the ring pull -but that's only cos I was a dozy idiot..Grin
